Elev8 AmeriCorps Program

Safe Passages is a non-profit organization based in Oakland, CA. We work to improve the lives of children, youth, and families through education programs, community partnerships, and public advocacy. We are looking for passionate, motivated, and dedicated individuals like you to join our AmeriCorps program for a year of service.

AmeriCorps members serve at school sites in Oakland and Emeryville in teams of 3 to 10. Members are trained to provide tutoring and mentoring to students in Reading, Writing, and Math. No previous teaching experience is necessary, only a passion for education. Check out our website to learn more about our program and what to expect.

Eligibility Requirements

All members must pass criminal history check, including FBI, DOJ, and NSOPW searches

Proof of tuberculosis clearance and Full COVID-19 Vaccine

High school diploma or equivalent

Proof of citizenship or legal permanent resident status

Commitment to the full term of service

Required Qualifications

Interest in working with children

A positive and resilient attitude

Communication skills necessary to work with children, school staff, and volunteers

Experience working with diverse communities

Desired Qualifications

Experience in teaching, tutoring or youth development

Demonstrated commitment to community service

Service locations include:

Reach Academy: Reach Academy is an elementary school (TK-5) in South Oakland. Reach Academy’s vision as a school is to develop critical thinking skills and a growth mindset in their students to prepare them for future success. Nearly all Reach students (at around 99%) qualify for free and reduced lunch and around 53% of students are English language learners. Reach Academy aims to not only provide academic support, but enriching experiences from lessons in the performing arts to arts and crafts.

Coliseum College Prep Academy: CCPA was founded in 2006 to provide a college prep education to the underserved youth of East Oakland which includes areas of Oakland most affected by poverty and incarceration. A majority (96%) of CCPA students qualify for free or reduced lunch and over half are English Language Learners (52%). In addition to providing academic supports CCPA pairs with other organizations such as Oakland Genesis, Skate Like a Girl and Youth Beat to provide sports and visual arts activities. CCPA aims to prepare students for attending colleges in the CSU and UC systems through concurrent enrollment at Peralta Community Colleges and academic enrichment programs.

Laurel Elementary: Laurel Elementary’s vision as a school is to develop critical thinking skills and a growth mindset in their students to prepare them for future success. In the 2022-2023 school year 83% of Laurel Elementary students were eligible for free and reduced-price meals, while about 23% are English language learners. Laurel Elementary serves a diverse community of African American (33%), Latino (29%), Asian (18%) and White (7%) students. Laurel’s Elev8 afterschool program is well supported by the administration and community and is well integrated into school day activities. Laurel's afterschool program includes not only academic enrichment, but sports programs and a choir program.

Fruitvale Elementary: Fruitvale Elementary’s vision as a school is to develop critical thinking skills and a growth mindset in their students to prepare them for future success by providing. Fruitvale Elementary serves a diverse community with students from various ethnic backgrounds such as Latino (46%), African American (26%), White (10%), and Asian (8%). At Fruitvale Elementary you will be fully incorporated in the classroom even during the day and will be working directly with teachers. In addition to academic support, Fruitvale Elementary partners with ANTS Sports provide sports activities like basketball and soccer.

MetWest High School:. Founded in 2000 in response to overcrowding and underperformance of schools in Oakland’s flatlands, MetWest was designed to provide focused and targeted services to students. MetWest serves a diverse student body a little over half of who are Latino (53%) and which includes sizeable communities of African American (24%), and Asian (7%) students. A majority of MetWest students qualify for free and reduced lunch (73%). MetWest is an academically focused campus emphasizing extracurricular opportunities like internships in addition to schoolwork. You will help students find and obtain internships, work directly with student leadership, and will participate in events from Registration Day to town halls with students and staff to school dances. At MetWest you will work closely with teachers and students to support its academically oriented programming and to build a positive and supportive school climate.

United for Success Academy: Founded in 2006 by parents, students and educators, UFSA was created to be small, community oriented and dedicated to helping students build healthy relationships and receive the resources they need to thrive in college and beyond. A vast majority of UFSA students qualify for free and reduced lunch (96%) and the student body is made of students with various immigration statuses and nationalities a majority of whom are Latino (78%) with communities of African American (9%) and Asian (4%) students. Additionally, over half (58%) of students are English Language Learners.

The Safe Passages AmeriCorps program is administered by California Volunteers and sponsored by Corporation for National and Community Service.
