Learn more here: https://uwm.edu/community-empowerment-institutional-inclusivity/about/ School/College/Division Description The Department of Biological Sciences is large, complex, dynamic, and very productive with an annual budget of approximately $7.7M including grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Energy, etc. It consists of 20 faculty, 10 academic staff, 6 classified staff, 9 postdocs/research associates, approximately 50 graduate students and a varying number of undergraduate teaching assistants and student hourly employees.The Department of Biological Sciences offers an undergraduate degree program with four different areas of focus (Ecology, Evolution and Behavior; Cell and Molecular Biology; Microbiology; and General Biology), as well as our Master’s program (with a thesis and non-thesis option) and a PhD program. Our department works with a significant international student population as well.Job Summary This is a fixed term/project appointment.Work will be performed primarily on-site. Hybrid work options may be available with specifics regarding work location requirements discussed during the interview process.Key Responsibilities:Laboratory management:
Manage standard operating protocols (SOPs), biosafety and animal protocols ( IBC and IACUC )
Manage laboratory databases and inventory lists (chemicals, plasmids, virus stocks, mouse colonies)
Order and ensure the availability of necessary laboratory supplies and reagents
Maintain laboratory equipment and assist in troubleshooting technical issues
Writing and updating lab protocols
Experimental Design and Execution:
Plan, design, and execute experiments
Keep detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks and records
Collaborate closely with other team members on diverse research projects
Utilize various laboratory techniques, including cell culture, molecular biology, biochemical and in vivo assays, to investigate disease-related pathways
Data Collection and Analysis:
Collect and organize experimental data, ensuring accuracy and consistency
Perform data analysis, statistical assessments, and data visualization
Generating figures for manuscripts and grant applications
Writing research manuscripts, reviews or book chapters
Literature Review:
Stay current with the latest developments in the field of molecular neurodegeneration and PD.
Summarize and present relevant research findings at lab meeting and department seminars
Present research data at research symposia and conferences
Mentoring:
Train junior scientists for standard techniques of cell and molecular biology
Assist junior scientists with developing research projects, experiment designing, collecting and analyzing data.
Minimum Qualifications
A PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline)
Preferred Qualifications
Previous research experience in Neuroscience is a plus.
Familiar with cell and molecular laboratory techniques, including tissue culture, PCR , molecular cloning, Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, stereotaxic surgeries and microscopy.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Target Salary Range $55,000-$75,000/annually. (Final salary offer will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.)
