Campus Safety Officer

Under the direction of the Security & Events Manager, the Campus Safety Officer will provide a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors. Perform security work to protect life and property; enforce laws and policies, maintain order, and prevent and investigate incidents. Proactively communicate with students, employees, and visitors in a manner that will foster and maintain positive and professional relationships. Train and lead contracted security personnel to ensure a collaborative response to incidents or emergencies, to include intervention in emergency situations on campus. Implement safety and security policies, procedures, and emergency management. The schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 6:30am – 4:30pm. The schedule may vary depending on department needs. Afterhours and overtime may be required as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties are performed on campus and off-site as needed. Working effectively and collaboratively in a team environment is a must. Working conditions are as follows:
Working indoors and outdoors is required. When working outdoors, will be subject to inclement weather. The work may be strenuous at times and will include lifting heavy objects, riding a bicycle, standing, and walking for long periods of time on hard surfaces. Includes driving vehicles and golf carts and transporting people across campus. Contacting individuals who may be distraught, violent, or considered a threat toward the campus and escorting them off campus or calling 911 when necessary. Risks include injury from slips, trips, falls, vehicle and bicycle accidents, cuts, and exposure to hostile or threatening individuals and inclement weather. Workers must follow strict safety procedures and exercise prudent judgement to avoid injuries.
This is a non-exempt, full-time, regular position. Overtime may be required as necessary.
SALARY RANGE: $21 - $23 Per Hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate degree or applicable certificate of completion from an accredited career school. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Two years’ experience as a police or security officer, or equivalent experience, education, and/or training.
Proficient using computers, such as the use of Microsoft office and various security software programs.
Must be in good physical condition and be able to function effectively while carrying the required equipment which is approximately 30 lbs.
Will on occasion be required to drive on behalf of Perry Technical Institute. Employee must possess a working vehicle, hold a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and produce proof of insurance.
Must be willing to consent to a drug test.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working within a school environment.
Security Guard Training certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of security procedures, policies, and regulations.
Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to learn the layout of the property and buildings.
Ability to communicate and respond calmly and effectively, utilize de-escalation techniques, and offer clear instructions under pressure and in crisis situations.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, with students, employees, visitors, and local law enforcement agencies while adhering to strict confidentiality and privacy standards.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and ride a bicycle.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and employee population.
Ability to maintain high standards of appearance, professionalism, and to be a positive role model to all.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Patrol buildings and grounds by foot, bicycle, golf cart, or vehicle to deter, identify, and respond to unwanted activity, suspicious individuals, or security-related incidents to ensure a safe and secure campus environment for students, employees, and visitors.
Monitor arrival and departure of all people and vehicles on campus.
Direct visitors to designated parking and check-in at the Visitor Center.
Make identification checks and issue ID badges and parking permits.
Enforce parking violations, issue and process tickets, and register vehicles.
Monitor vehicles in parking areas to prevent vandalism or theft; respond to situations of stolen property, accidents, parking incidents and other disturbances or situations.
Complete daily activity reports, incident reports, and investigation reports.
Provide vehicle services to students, employees, and visitors by unlocking doors, jumpstarting batteries, or inflating tires.
Respond to panic and lockdown alerts by assessing and de-escalating the situation, escorting individuals off-campus, rendering aid, and using non-lethal measures if necessary to protect the campus.
Escort discharged employees, students, trespassers, and other unwelcome parties off the premises.
Patrol and inspect buildings and grounds to detect and prevent fire, theft, illegal entry, escapes and property damage; examine gates, doors and windows to ensure security; check lighting as needed.
Report any unusual conditions or malfunctions in heating, plumbing, electrical, or other parts of the buildings’ mechanical systems.
Review security logs, process and follow up on incident reports, identify security concerns, and report on trends and problem areas. Investigate as needed by reviewing security camera and access control systems.
Assist with maintaining the school’s S2 access control system, building burglar alarm systems, video surveillance systems, and lockdown and panic buttons, both on-site and remotely.
Communicate effectively with employees, students, vendors, and visitors through both written and verbal communication, maintaining a professional and approachable demeanor.
Use various forms of communication such as two-way radio, cell phone, and email.
Monitor and control crowds during campus events, on campus and off campus.
Assist with ensuring students, employees, and visitors follow school safety guidelines and requirements.
Participate in routine emergency drills and training to test the readiness for various types of emergencies.
Respond to burglar alarms on campus during business hours and assist with unlocking gates and doors.
Receive lost property found on campus and turn it in to designated area.
Receive incident reports, obtain statements, and conduct preliminary investigations.
Intervene in personal and property risk incidents to diffuse situation.
Attend training and obtain certifications as directed and required by school policy, state laws, and federal laws.
Maintain good attendance and the ability to work well with others.
Assist with spreading ice melt, snow removal, and picking up trash to keep the campus safe and clean.
Follow all PTI operational procedures, state laws, and federal laws.
Provide administrative support to the Facilities & Safety Office.
Perform other duties as assigned.
