J.D. degree from an accredited school of law; licensed to practice law in Texas or admitted to any U.S. state bar (If not admitted to the State Bar of Texas, must apply for and receive admission to the State Bar of Texas within six months of employment.)

Knowledge of: computer legal resource methods, Texas Property Code; Texas Insurance Code; Texas Penal Code; Texas Family Code; Texas consumer law; Texas Estate Code; and the United States Constitution.

Skill in establishing rapport with a variety of clients.

Knowledge of higher education Constitutional law issues, university policies and procedures, and local court procedures.

Experience in legal services for students.

Experience in non-profit/legal aid services.

Experience with or willingness to learn website maintenance and maintaining a social media presence.

Experience managing budgets and expenses.

Fluency in a language in addition to English.

Licensed to practice law for at least five years.

Licensed to practice law in Texas.

More than three years of experience supervising and managing attorneys.

Job DescriptionResponsible for providing legal assistance to currently-enrolled Texas State students, presenting legal topics to classes and groups on campus, including students, faculty, staff, and organizations. The Attorney for Students manages the daily operations of the office, including preparing the budget, authorizing expenses, and supervising the staff attorneys and the administrative staff.Job Duties

Provide legal advice and limited scope representation to students in legal matters including but not limited to landlord/tenant issues; civil procedure; consumer protection, insurance matters; tickets and charges; uncontested family law matters; powers of attorney; simple wills, advance directives, employment agreements, and issues; contracts and immigration law.

Provide legal education, resources, and referrals to private legal council or other community organizations to give students the tools necessary to effectively advocate for themselves.

Make frequent legal presentations to students, faculty, staff, and others.

Oversee and manage financial matters, including the office’s annual budget and expenses.

Oversee all personnel matters within the office, including evaluations and personnel actions of staff attorneys and administrative support staff.

Oversee and manage office reporting and assessment requirements, social media presence, website maintenance, and development of marketing materials.

Draft legal documents that may include immigration forms, simple wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, expunctions, civil court petitions and orders, and name changes.

Perform other duties as assigned.
