DescriptionCLASS SUMMARY:

This is the first of five levels in the Public Safety Communications series. Incumbents receive incoming calls for police, fire, medical, and other emergency assistance, and dispatch appropriate units via radio and telephone. Responsibilities may include receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls from the public; dispatching emergency units; coordinating and relaying information; entering, updating, and retrieving, information from the National Crime Information Center; and maintaining daily radio logs.

Receives and routes telephone calls reporting situations and incidences of an emergency or life-threatening nature; questions caller and solicits information; receives and routes non-emergency telephone calls; maintains operational records and logs.

Dispatches appropriate units to specific calls utilizing a radio console; tracks calls and notifies appropriate individual(s) of situations requiring their attention.

Monitors the status and location of all public safety units.

Enters, updates, and retrieves information from NCIC (National Crime Information Center).

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical QualificationsTRAINING AND EXPERIENCE(positions in this class typically require):

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.Supplemental InformationLICENSING REQUIREMENTS(positions in this class typically require):

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.NOTE:
