Eight years of direct relevant experience is required, with a sustained demonstration of accounting skills. The Technical Accounting Manager in the Corporate Accounting Research Group is an individual contributor role; however, individuals in this level should have the ability to lead and provide guidance to other Managers, Directors and Vice Presidents or above within the Finance Department. CPA is required.Assignments for the Technical Accounting Manager frequently require the ability to effectively converse, provide detailed explanations and challenge and/or defend points of view with executive management, including Duke Energy’s CFO, other Vice Presidents or Senior Vice Presidents, as well as with the external auditors. Additionally, the ability to successfully manage external inquiries from regulatory commissions and the Securities and Exchange Commission is critical. The Technical Accounting Manager may also be involved in stakeholder engagement discussions or other inquiries with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (“FASB”) Staff. Assignments for the Technical Accounting Manager relate to areas of accounting that are complex where the accounting theory is gray and requires significant judgment. Generally, in these accounting areas Duke Energy has little or no historic experience, they require substantial judgment or require coordinating efforts across a broad group.This position is actively involved in (1) accounting for major transactions, new accounting issues, new accounting guidance, and significant non-recurring transactions, (2) the documentation of significant accounting or reporting matters and (3) the fulfillment of the consultation protocol for interacting with the Corporate Accounting Research Group and the external auditor regarding significant or non-routine accounting and reporting matters.Responsibilities
Accounting research for transactions where Duke Energy has less, if any, historic experience or requires more judgment, including researching accounting for new lines of business or new business strategies. Position requires providing input to operational management for changes to approach, contracts, language, etc. in order to drive the desired results.
Provide guidance and direction to other managers and directors related to (1) accounting for major transactions, new accounting issues, new accounting guidance, and significant non-recurring transactions, (2) the documentation of significant accounting or reporting matters and (3) the fulfillment of the consultation protocol for interacting with the Corporate Accounting Research Group and the external auditor regarding significant or non-routine accounting and reporting matters. This role will represent the company as the primary accounting subject matter expert in complex areas such as leases, revenue recognition, impairment assessments and goodwill.
Leading implementation of new accounting standards with broad impacts to the Company.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Accounting or related field
Eight (8) plus years related work experience
CPA
Desired Qualifications
Masters degree in Accounting
Incumbent should have proven experience directing the activities of others in a matrix environment
Ability to apply judgment in complex/gray accounting and transaction areas
Experience interacting with executive management
Ability to support accounting theory and application with external auditors
Effective and advanced communication skills (both written and verbal skills in presenting complex material)
Can drive processes to ensure timely and accurate decisions
Builds consensus for a course of action
Able to research accounting theory in areas where Duke Energy has less, if any, historic experience, and recommend how to apply theory to a new transaction
Practical experience in transaction accounting including purchase accounting, discontinued operations, assets held for sale and accounting for goodwill
Experience managing large projects that require collaboration with multiple departments throughout the organization (i.e. implementation of new accounting standard, audits, acquisition planning, etc.)
Ability to support accounting positions with third parties including external auditors, regulatory commissions, FASB Staff and Securities and Exchange Commission

Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the assigned Duke Energy facility.
