Scholastic's Data & Analytics practice plays a pivotal role in the incubation of high value strategic initiatives and the development of data driven solutions for the Scholastic enterprise. We are hiring a Director of Strategic Data Projects to join our broader Data & Analytics (DNA) group. Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Data Projects, this person will sit at the intersection of data, technology, and strategy, applying business acumen and functional expertise to solve problems and drive a data and analytics culture. Working as a trusted partner with each business unit, the Director of Strategic Data Projects will work to develop and guide business strategy rooted to solve our internal client's needs and improve the customer experience.

The ideal candidate understands how to take a vague business need and frame it into a fully scoped project or analysis. The role will have the variety of strategy consulting with a strong data driven spin and the satisfaction of pushing your ideas through to implementation. This individual has an expert understanding of how to apply data handling and modeling skills to devise data-backed strategies for current and future market conditions within our ecosystem and the market at large.

This individual serves in a player-coach model and is expected to both lead and directly contribute to active and net new projects while also mentoring team members on how to query the data and apply business rules and domain logic relevant to the problem being solved. They will further use their expertise to layer industry knowledge in the development of their strategies and storytelling.

The role requires a person who can quickly understand the nuances and synergies of the Scholastic enterprise, the lines of business within, and their operating models. The Director of Strategic Data Projects will be a primary liaison between our central Data and Analytics function and our business partners, and will often work strategically with members of the C-Suite and Presidents of our various businesses to incubate new initiatives and drive innovation in sales, marketing, and operations. They must be able to present an executive-level storyline.

This role is critical in ensuring that Scholastic's wealth of data is used to provide thought partnership and drive business results across Scholastic. We are seeking a curious, passionate data and analytics leader to drive the transformation of data into insights that enable business breakthroughs. Beyond a strong analytical foundation, good business judgment and a talent for clear and concise communication will all be key to success in the role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Systematically guide business partners to pinpoint the root cause of business problems, test hypotheses, and manage strategic data-driven projects through their lifecycle to achieve revenue growth goals at an enterprise and line of business level while meeting the needs of our customers.
  • Maintain accountability for the overall quality and delivery of work, with clear communication to project stakeholders and sponsors.
  • Develop business strategies that synergistically work across data and analytics, sales and marketing, technology, finance and operations.
  • Abstractly apply data handling and modeling skills, business acumen, and understanding of Scholastic's data architecture to guide and mentor others in defining an analytical framework and creating the narrative shell for storytelling.
  • Serve as a bridge between business and technology / data teams by understanding use cases and relevant processes and systems and how they relate to business performance and opportunities for growth.
  • Establish expertise in the tools and policies the business is utilizing and understand how to use them to efficiently understand our customers' current behavior and model scenarios for future behavior.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

  • 8-10 years in a strategy, consulting, or analytical role with broad business problem solving expertise.
  • You have a unique combination of technical skills, storytelling ability, and intuition to understand and explain what is happening to data from inception to model to business decision.
  • Experience with defining and managing scope under the pressure of tight deadlines, with strong attention to detail and superior project management.
  • Strategic thinker and self-starter with excellent problem solving, analytical and decision making skills, as well as a proven ability to collaborate effectively and communicate with disparate audiences.
  • Experience with risk management, tracking project deliverables, and balancing expectations.
  • Ability to perform financial modeling and ROI analysis to help quantify and evaluate key business decisions.
  • You excel in a fast paced, team-oriented environment with rapidly evolving business demands while maintaining high standards of excellence and integrity.
  • BA in business or a quantitative discipline from a top tier university. MBA a plus but not essential.
  • Experience in collaborating with or managing: data engineers, data scientists, digital analysts, business intelligence developers or software engineers/product owners
  • Solid analytical capabilities, with proficiency in SQL; experience
  • with AWS (Redshift, S3, SageMaker) a plus.
  • Expected to know MS Office and/or Google Suite products
  • Experience with Power BI, Adobe Analytics, Salesforce, Oracle, or Qualtrics are nice to have
