The incumbent will report to the Head of Communications, oversee the work of a science writer, and join a team of content creators, helping to lead and execute strategic communications campaigns.The ideal candidate is a skilled science communicator with the ability to translate complex topics for a range of stakeholders. The incumbent will help to develop and execute media relations strategies, engaging key media covering scientific topics while handling proactive and reactive media efforts. The manager will also train and elevate expert research voices, actively seeking opportunities to position PPPL as a leader in the carbon-free, clean energy conversation.Adept at translating academic research for a public audience, the manager serves as the team’s lead science writer and editor, producing research publications and managing one science writer. Working collaboratively with the communications team, the incumbent will ensure the Lab’s brand, voice, and message is clearly articulated to key stakeholders. The selected candidate will work with the Head of Communications to serve as a liaison between PPPL and the DOE, as well as Princeton.Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. Responsibilities Core Duties:- Oversee science news and media relations strategies, serving as both lead science writer and editor.- Produce science-focused news releases, advisories, feature stories, and other content targeting the media, policymakers, and the general public.- Work closely with scientific researchers, translating academic papers and establishing and maintaining a network of thought leaders at the organization.- Cultivate relationships with key science media through proactive and reactive approaches.- Manage and oversee the work of a science writer, providing mentorship and supervision.- Work collaboratively with the communications team to convey scientific concepts through multimedia/web projects and other targeted communications campaigns.- Conceptualize, develop, write, and edit an annual research publication.- Copyedit and proo Lab-wide documents and other scientific publications.- Serve as a project team lead or coordinator when needed or assigned.- Alongside the Head of Communications, facilitate media interviews, film crew visits, and other requests while enforcing DOE media relations policies and procedures.- Assist Head of Communications with crisis communications as needed.- Assist with media relations at special events, including logistics and materials.- Regularly participate in hybrid and in-person team meetings and retreats.- Advance and enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Qualifications Education and Experience:- 5 -7 years in a marketing/communications role.- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.- Proven expert of AP Style.- Proven track record of leading and executing media relations strategies.- A background in science is a plus but not required.
