Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Facilities Management and Reliability. The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones. Responsibilities The Equipment Specialist (Automotive) provides inventory control of automotive parts for a variety of mobile assets in the fleet, based on the knowledge of the utilization, properties, and characteristics of automotive parts, tools, and other equipment. In this position, you will: Develops, establishes, and/or maintains a computerized inventory of automotive parts for a variety of vehicles, motorized equipment, and boats in the transportation fleet. Executes purchasing by locating sources of automotive parts through vendors' sources, tools, and equipment, including new, obsolete, or difficult-to-find. Examines parts and equipment descriptions and researches manufacturers to determine which items may be used, with or without modification, in place of others. Determines which items are interchangeable and recommends appropriate substitutes, such as replacements for obsolete items, items for which the original manufacturer is out of business, more cost-efficient equivalents for expensive parts, etc. Prepares reports on production equipment, material and maintenance; analyzes maintenance actions and assigns industry later rates to maintenance actions performed by each mechanic and documents service repair orders. Serves as Safety Coordinator for the vehicle repair shop to ensure that workers use proper safety equipment, injured workers receive proper treatment, and that safety hazards are eliminated or minimized by adherence to safety and fire prevention regulations. (Must submit a copy of your valid license) Additional Information: Physical Demands: The incumbent frequently works long hours at a computer monitor and with numbers and fine print, which may result in eyestrain. The incumbent routinely lifts supplies and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office section of a garage which is susceptible to noise, drafts and carbon monoxide. Air conditioning and heating are provided in the office section of the garage. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as applying contracting and procurement procedures, reviewing planned orders, creating requisitions, developing statement of work for small acquisitions and services, as well as utilizing purchase card for small acquisitions and services. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.
