Job Summary:
The Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for administering prescribed medications to residents in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, and regulatory guidelines. This role plays a critical part in ensuring residents receive the appropriate medications on time, while maintaining safety, dignity, and respect for each resident’s well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer medications to residents as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring accurate dosages, times, and methods of administration.
- Maintain accurate medication administration records (MAR) for each resident.
- Observe and document any potential side effects or adverse reactions to medications.
- Report any concerns or changes in a resident’s health status to the supervising nurse or manager.
- Assist with medication ordering, inventory management, and organization, ensuring medications are properly stored and within expiration dates.
- Assist residents with medication reminders, understanding of medications, and ensure they take their prescribed doses as directed.
- Ensure resident confidentiality is maintained, in line with HIPAA and other privacy regulations.
- Collaborate with nursing staff, caregivers, and other team members to ensure a comprehensive care plan for each resident.
- Assist with other resident care tasks as needed, including but not limited to daily living activities, meal assistance, and comfort measures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in healthcare or related field preferred.
- Successful completion of a Medication Technician training program or certification (if applicable by state law).
- Previous experience in a healthcare or assisted living setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to medication administration.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to work as part of a team.
- Compassionate, patient, and professional demeanor with residents and families.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Must pass background checks and drug screening as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, transfer, and assist residents as needed.
- Ability to stand, bend, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Good manual dexterity for preparing and administering medications.
Work Environment
- This position is performed in a residential assisted living setting.
- The Med Tech may be required to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
