Position Title: Orthodontic Assistant- Full Time

Reports To: Dr. Nayak

Hawaiian Smiles Orthodontics is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and personable Orthodontic assistant! We are a multi-office location with multiple doctors on 2 Hawaiian islands (Oahu and Big Island). One year of orthodontic assisting recommended and highly preferred. Dental assisting experience REQUIRED. We are willing to train the right motivated candidate. Traveling inter-island is REQUIRED- all travel expenses paid by company with extra daily pay for traveling to Kona.

Schedule: 4-5 days a week (depending on schedule- Changes every week)

No weekends

Required Hours: 32 hours every week/64 hours every 2 weeks

Pay: starting $18 to $25 (Max 3-5 years) depending on orthodontic experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: MUST BE WILLING TO TRAVEL TO THE BIG ISLAND (1-2X a week)- Expenses paid for by office

Job Summary:

The Orthodontic Assistant assists in the performance of quality, caring, clinical procedures by aiding the doctor smoothly and unobtrusively during examinations and treatment. The Orthodontic Assistant performs clinical and technical procedures under the supervision of the orthodontist as well as prepares the operatory and equipment, gets the patient ready, and maintains awareness of the comfort and safety needs of patients.

Required: Traveling inter-island (1-2 days a week)

Essential Duties:

Records treatment information on the patient's chart, including treatment rendered, the type of treatment planned and the amount of chair time needed for next appointment.

Assists the doctor by passing instruments, aspirating intraoral fluids, mixing materials and medicaments during examinations or treatment.

Maintains professional communication with patients

Provides customer service support to patients by escorting them to and from the treatment room and prepping them for care by the doctor.

Exposes, develops, and downloads X-rays.

Take intraoral and extraoral photographs and download to the imaging software.

Prepares all treatment rooms including, but not limited to, set-up, decontamination, sterilization of all instruments, cleaning and restocking.

Maintains cleanliness of the lab and sterilizing area.

Taking Alginates and making retainers

Pours and trims study models.

Use scanner to acquire intraoral scans.

Organize and aid in Invisalign treatment and tray distribution

Changes all chemical solutions, i.e., disinfectant soaks and sprays, sterilents, ultrasonic, presoak and Xray processing.

Reviews patient’s medical history, progress from the previous visit, if applicable, and the scheduled treatment plan with each patient.

Takes impressions for diagnostic and working models.

Ensures lights, units, and automatic processors are turned on prior to the first patient.

Applies nonaerosol and noncaustic topical agents.

Inspects patient’s oral cavity and charts lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth.

Cleans hand pieces, vacuum traps, and sharp instruments.

Pours and trims study models.

Monitors and tracks incoming and outgoing lab cases.

Maintains records of supplies and communicates with lead orthodontic assistant in order to keep supplies in stock.

Maintains plaster trap and lab counter areas.

Removes arch wires and ligature ties.

Takes intraoral measurements for orthodontic procedures

Seats adjusted retainers or headgears. Check for loose orthodontic bands.

Removes cement excess from supragingival surfaces of teeth.

Sizes stainless steel crowns and bands.

Performs temporary cementation and removal of temporary crowns and orthodontic bands.

Monitors placement and ligation of arch wires.

Places and removes elastic orthodontic separators.

Participates in taking photographs of bonding, debands to help grow social media presence of the practice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Skilled in the use of standard orthodontic office equipment including: Autoclave, model trimmer, X-ray machine - Cephalometric, Panoramic X-ray, 3D X-rays, X-ray processor, X-ray duplicator, ultrasonic, Vacu-press, and hand pieces.

Knowledge of cross contamination and how to prevent it.

Ability to maintain composure and professionalism when exposed to stressful situations.

Knowledge of OSHA regulations and changes.

Ability to take radiographs, including Cephalometric, Pano and Conebeam Ct.

Knowledge of English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Skilled in the use of standard office equipment including: telephones, calculators, copiers, fax, computers, and computer software (MS Excel, Word, Practice Management software).

Ability to engender trust from the doctors, co-workers, and patients.

Ability to work cooperatively with management, staff, and patients.

Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete tasks in a timely and independent manner.

Ability to accept constructive criticism.

Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and maintain confidentiality.

Ability to communicate and express thoughts and ideas competently.

Ability to quickly grasp relevant concepts regarding duties and responsibilities.

Education / Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum of 1 year(s) relevant experience as dental assistant is Required

Special Requirements/Certifications/Licenses:

Dental assisting license REQUIRED- doesnt have to be specifically orthodontics

Ability to travel inter-island is REQUIRED

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

May be required to lift up to 50 lbs.

Hand-eye coordination and hand, arm, and finger mobility for detailed work with objects.

Active movement throughout the day: sitting, walking, standing, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, etc. (not a sedentary position).

Vision: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Hearing: able to satisfactorily communicate with patients, doctor, and other staff members to ensure that verbal communication is clearly understood, particularly during emergency situations.

Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or operate equipment.

May be required to administer CPR.

Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation.

Exposure to moderate noise levels.

Exposure to hectic, fast-paced, high anxiety environments.

Additional or different duties may be assigned occasionally at employer’s discretion.
