The Department of Ocean Science at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science has an exciting opportunity for a full time Research Associate 1. The incumbent will be part of a team who is responsible for the daily tritium analytical operations. Will be responsible for keeping the lab's systems running and provide maintenance for the tritium analytical system.Primary Duties and Responsibilities: (Performs duties and responsibilities under minimal supervision)
Perform atmospheric distillation, vacuum distillation and electrolysis of water samples.
Will prepare magnesium ovens
Maintain detailed lab records
Maintain and service vacuum pumps
Perform basic electronic maintenance and repairs
Will fabricate custom laboratory equipment
Will maintain and operate large low temperature baths
Will operate electronic balances
Will operate low-level tritium gas proportional counters
Provide maintenance and construction of vacuum extraction lines
Provide maintenance and will operate low and high temperature ovens
Will fabricate electrodes used in electrolysis cells
Will communicate with Tritium Laboratory clients
Clean glassware
Education and Experience:
Must have a Bachelors Degree in Physical Science. No experience necessary, but experience working in a analytical chemistry laboratory is desirable.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work with basic machine shop tools
Knowledge with vacuum systems, electrolysis systems, high voltage systems, and low-level radioisotope counting
Must be knowledgeable of general lab maintenance and repairs, fabrication of custom lab gear and basic electronics.
Ability to critically troubleshoot equipment failures
Must be a team player and be an active team member
Must be able to a think critically and outside of box
