The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Assistant Scientist to work in Miami, FL.The research will support the Gulf of Mexico Integrated Ecosystem Assessment and other socioeconomic research conducted by the SSRG designed to provide science-based management advice in a manner that is useful under current governance structures while also supporting the transition towards ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the Gulf of Mexico. The research will involve integration of ecological and human dimensions indicators and analyses to investigate relationships between ecosystem status and human well-being and/or community vulnerability. The research will also involve the implementation of participatory research methods and analysis of qualitative data to integrate local ecological knowledge into ecosystem models and other analyses. The incumbent’s research will build on ongoing efforts at SEFSC and SERO to inform the implementation of ecosystem-based-management of sub-tropical marine and coastal ecosystems.Candidates should possess a Ph.D. degree in anthropology, sociology, or a related field and at least one year of relevant work-related experience. Experience with quantitative methods, qualitative and participatory research methods, statistical analysis, text analysis, and with the synthesis and analysis of social data. Strong communication and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite), the ability to work with large amounts of data, and familiarity with interdisciplinary analysis are required.
