Laboratory Technician

This employee performs routine laboratory analysis and related tasks for SWIG’s patented water treatment technologies. The employee is under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director.
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION
The employee will use a variety of laboratory equipment and chemical reagents for the analysis of water and soil samples. The employee will use a variety of soil processing equipment to develop filter media technology blends for testing. The employee is expected to work at SWIG R&D Facility based in Orange Park, Clay County, Florida. The Facility contains outdoor pilot testing systems and an indoor laboratory environment. The employee may be exposed to dangerous chemicals and/or fumes while performing sample analysis. Proper PPE must be used at all times. The employee may occasionally work offsite at a water or wastewater treatment plant or effluent discharge area and may then be exposed to extremes of weather or dangerous chemicals/fumes.

Pay rate is dependent on level of experience and education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory and maintain equipment in a clean and properly functioning state; GLP.
Perform accurate laboratory analysis of SWIG experimental processes, as well as water samples from water and wastewater plants.
Run pilot system examining media hydraulic responses and nutrient removal performance.
Determine soil moisture content, measure for media hydraulic conductivity, conduct soil particle analysis.
Maintain written and excel based testing logs to track performance of different treatment technologies.
Accurately completes and maintains a variety of reports as required by local, state, and federal regulations (as needed).
Maintains a quality assurance program that meets the requirements of the Director or various regulators.
Accurately communicates the outcome of testing to the Laboratory Director in order to provide for adjustment to the testing procedures and/or experimental processes.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Calculates percentage of water used, soil used, and chemical dosage used; takes and tests samples; reads meters and gauges.
May assist with the operation of a water treatment facility. May assist in the repair and maintenance of a variety of equipment.
May help clean and maintain water quality samplers.
Performs general maintenance activities at the R&D facility. Performs other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Working experience operating electrical and non-electrical laboratory equipment.
Must have an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the property landlord.
Ability to keep records and prepare clear and concise reports of water operations and test results.
Ability to understand and follow moderately complex written and oral instructions, read, write legibly, and make accurate arithmetic calculations.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of an Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, material science or a related program. Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, material science or a related program is preferred.
Must possess a valid Florida driver's license and have their own transportation.
Some experience in the operation of a water treatment facility and water distribution system is preferred.
Past experience working as a lab technician is preferred.
Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
