Utilities Excavator Operator I-III

The wet utility Excavator Operator digs trenches for pipe laying crews to set sewer or water supply lines. The Excavator Operator is able to assist ground crews maneuver trench safety guards and material into the trenches. The Excavator Operator is knowledgeable with underground excavating procedures and ground grading.
TOTAL COMPENSATION
$28.56 to $52.36 per hour with potential for overtime
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Drive, operate and maneuver heavy equipment
Maintain knowledge of the operating equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of wet utilities, sewer, and treatment or water supply and distribution
Read and interpret utilities blueprints to dig soil according to defined specifications
Utilize the appropriate and/or assigned construction machinery to safely, efficiently, and productively excavate trenches move, and grade soils
Understand all safety requirements of underground excavating and trenching
Convey information to supervisors, and co-workers effectively
Maintain active awareness of surroundings near the equipment to maintain safe operation and distances from potential hazards such as underground utility lines, other equipment, and other workers
Perform pre and post equipment checks and reports equipment issues to supervisors
Perform basic repairs to equipment in the event field mechanics are not available on site
Coordinate machine functions with crew members in response to hand and audio signals.
Maintain familiarity with and understanding of utilities work flow of duties and team coordination with other trades
Maintain assigned equipment and perform daily inspections to ensure compliance with operational and safety requirements including but not limited to checking fuel, oil, and/or hydraulic levels.
Checking primary email on a regular basis for any communication from the company, as this is the company’s primary mode of communication.
Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 2 years’ verifiable experience in the safe and efficient use of operating heavy equipment in the heavy commercial, industrial and civil construction market
Must have a good safety history and a willingness to engage and contribute to ongoing safe work practices including strong knowledge of excavation, trenching and shoring safety standards
Must be reliable and dependable with good attendance habits
Ability to follow direction and work within parameters established by Management and Supervision
Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors, team members, and client representatives
General knowledge and understanding of excavating practices and locate requirements.
Consistent access to a reliable personal email account.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Required: 2 years of proven equipment operation experience in the utilities construction industry
Preferred: High school diploma or GED
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Operators are subject to continuous bouncing, shaking and equipment vibration throughout the course of their shift. Work functions require the ability to sit, stand, and ride in vehicles for long periods of time, as well as the physical ability and mobility to access equipment, modify attachments, and control cabin.
Ability to push/pull/drag lifting chains/straps up to 53 ft./lbs.
Ability to push/pull/drag equipment by assisting up to 34 ft./lbs.
Ability to push/pull, open/close engine housing hatches up to 25-46 ft./lbs.
Ability to lift/load/carry up to 80 lbs., including but not limited to fittings, generators, jumping jacks, equipment, and or other various materials.
Ability to lift/carry 20-45lbs.
Ability to assist team-lifting 35 lbs. power equipment.
Ability to climb into and out of equipment
Ability to reach above head and 6-inches with fine gross motor skill.
Ability to operate various sized fire extinguishers, in training or emergency situations.
Ability to dig/shovel various soils while performing daily duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Outside work exposed to variant weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow) and muddy ground conditions. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
