Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working as a District Custodian Trainee is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Skills in cleaning procedures, techniques and handling chemicals.

Operating knowledge of custodial equipment and snow blowers.

Ability to safely clean and move furniture.

English language skills, bilingual desired.

Basic mathematical skills.

Personal computer and keyboarding skills.

Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of personnel in a positive and cooperative manner.

Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

Ability to read, understand and interpret policies and procedures, laws, rules and instructions.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to manage multiple priorities.

Ability to pass various pre-employment background screenings.

Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

Completed the Westminster Public Schools Custodial Academy.

BOCES Safety Training Certificate required within 60 days of hire.

American Heart Association CPR and First Aid Certification may be required within three months of hire. (Preschool only)

1.Maintain communications by:

a. Meeting with supervisor and/or custodial staff, e.g., daily activity, District or facility needs, schedule.

b. Being accessible via District communication devices.

c. Updating Daily Custodial Communication Log.

d. Completing Daily Site Inspection and boiler report upon opening the facility.

2.Maintain building safety by:

a. Adhering to district safety guidelines and procedures.

b. Opening and/or closing the facility, e.g., disarming/arming security system, turning lights on/off.

c. Checking boilers for proper temperature and pressure.

d. Participating in required professional development.

e. Checking emergency lights, exit lights and elevator work properly.

f. Removing snow and applying ice melt as needed.

g. Assessing proper operation of custodial equipment.

3. Maintain clean and safe classrooms, gym, weight room, auditorium, computer lab, library, cafeteria, public areas, etc. by:

a. Following the guidelines set forth in the Custodial Academy Procedure Book.

b. Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping/spot mopping floors and stairs.

c. Removing scuffs, carpet stains and gum.

d. Buffing floors.

e. Wiping, dusting and/or disinfecting table tops, desks, chairs, counter tops, doors, windows/glass, door knobs, mirrors, white/chalkboards, sinks, water fountains, railings and weight room equipment.

f. Emptying trash/recycling containers and changing liners as needed.

g. Emptying pencil sharpeners.

h. Stocking dispensers.

4.Maintain clean outside areas by:

a. Checking, reporting and taking the necessary actions to correct vandalism.

b. Cleaning and securing broken windows.

c. Removing debris from school grounds.

d. Emptying trash containers.

e. Removing snow.

5.Maintain clean and safe restroom/locker room facilities by:

a. Checking and cleaning periodically throughout the day.

b. Unlocking restrooms as needed.

c. Sweeping and mopping floor.

d. Cleaning and disinfecting sinks, counter tops, stalls, toilets, urinals, sanitary napkin holders, walls, mirrors, trash cans, all hard surfaces and benches.

e. Stocking toilet paper, paper towels and soap.

f. Unclogging toilet/sink as needed.

g. Emptying trash containers.

6.Perform detailed intermission cleaning according to the Custodial Academy Procedure Book by:

a. Removing and returning furniture to and from rooms.

b. Thoroughly wiping, dusting and disinfecting the facility.

c. Sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing and buffing tile floors

d. Refinishing wood floors.

e. Vacuuming and shampooing carpet.

f. Power washing restroom and/or locker room walls.

g. Changing HVAC filters.

7.Provide services to the District by:

a. Completing in building work orders as trained.

b. Removing and returning furniture as needed.

c. Raising and lowering flags.

d. Changing interior light bulbs.

e. Replacing ceiling tiles when necessary.

f. Providing access into buildings, e.g., substitute custodians, contractors.

g. Painting minor touch-ups on door frames, walls, etc.

h. Using approved methods to exterminate insects and vermin.

i. Adjusting functionality of tables and desks in classrooms.

j. Setting up and breaking down tables, chairs/risers for breakfast, lunch and scheduled events.

k. Performing other tasks as assigned.

8. Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality of any information regarding students, personnel and all job-related matters.
