The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds and over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. The Psychology Department consists of psychologist candidates, clinical psychologists, forensic psychologists, psychology supervisors, and a neuropsychologist. In addition, there is a robust psychology student training program for both externs and predoctoral interns. These staff work in the 24-hour State psychiatric hospital with individuals voluntarily and involuntarily committed for treatment. Patients receiving treatment at CMHH-FL have severe and persistent mental illness and may have a traumatic brain injury, trauma disorders, and other complex dynamics. Each treatment team is multidisciplinary, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, physicians, and mental health clinicians. In addition, the hospital offers addiction specialists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, creative arts therapists, peer support, safety, dietary, and chaplain services.Opt-in below to receive text message updates on CDHS recruiting events! CDHSCareers Description of JobThe Director of Psychology exists to provide leadership and oversight to the Psychology Department, which includes all psychologists within the hospital and the training program. The Director of Psychology informs management decisions through specialized knowledge and experience within the psychology profession and contributes to the planning, developing, and implementation of program operations. In collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer, this position oversees and ensures the efficacy of the services provided by the psychology team via program evaluation, program development, and program implementation. The Director is required to have a good working knowledge of multiple specialties within the discipline, including specific licensing and certification requirements, as well as ethical and practice-specific guidelines. Importantly, this position must have strong knowledge of the Colorado Revised Statute, specifically the civil commitment criteria and processes under Title 27 Article 65. The Director is responsible for the employee supervisory responsibilities of this work unit. In addition, this position develops and contributes to the provision of training and educational materials for the work unit and for hospital-wide in-services to staff and patients. Lastly, this position will provide discipline-specific services to our patients across the hospital on an as-needed basis and serve as a hospital consultant specific to the respective area of expertise.Work Unit Leadership:The Psychology Director provides leadership and direction to the daily operations of the work unit, consisting of various levels of psychology staff. In collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer, this position assesses the needs for the work unit based on program evaluation, patient treatment needs, the overall hospital mission, and resource allocation. The Director of Psychology supports consistent implementation and compliance with related treatment standards and external agency rules/regulations (e.g. The Joint Commission TJC, Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services CMS), reports any deficits to leadership, and collaborates in developing operational procedures to ensure patient care. This includes the development, oversight, and management of department-specific policies, protocols, and processes that are in line with those standards, as well as hospital expectations, and discipline ethics. The Director serves as an advocate for the work unit and communicates needs and plans to leadership, which includes analyzing issues related to the therapeutic treatment services offered by this work unit. This position must have good working knowledge of the clinical disciplines' training, regulatory, and licensure/certification requirements and practices to ensure they are upheld. The Director ensures effective services are being provided by developing, implementing, and monitoring patient assessments, treatment planning, group sessions, individual therapy, psychological assessment, coordination of care with support system engagement, and individual interventions. Should there be a need for quality improvement, the Director is responsible for identifying those needs and developing a corrective plan of action to present to leadership. To support efficacy, this position will create work unit protocols and audit tools. This position will monitor all department-related expenditures and individual clinician’s budgets by approving P-card purchases and overseeing annual operating funds assigned to the work unit. Monitor the testing budget. A specific budget line for psychological testing materials. The Director will make efforts to develop and maintain student training opportunities when possible, which will require familiarity with discipline-specific educational requirements and relationships with educational institutions. This position will lead all interviewing, hiring, and training of employees, and organizing and leading department meetings. The Director of Psychology possesses specialized knowledge within the discipline and regularly participates in hospital committees and work groups. This position is responsible for all work unit-related needs during business hours and after hours as needed.Clinical Supervision and Personnel:The Director is responsible for employee supervisory responsibilities for the work unit. This includes the provision of clinical and administrative supervision, professional development, employee performance evaluations, employee performance plans, corrective and disciplinary actions, staff scheduling, position descriptions, recruitment, retention, interviewing and hiring, onboarding, and training all staff, maintenance of competencies, and ensuring hospital wide required training has been completed. This position will ensure student training opportunities are available and the associated supervision is provided as required by the Hospital, educational institution, and respective discipline. In addition, and in collaboration with leadership, this position is responsible for developing work unit competencies and continuing education as needed for the work unit. Currently, direct supervision includes three Psychologist II (one clinical, one forensic, and one neuro) who are responsible for their own direct reports, with a total of 10 Full Time Employees (FTE) within the work unit. This position serves as the appointing authority for actions and decisions that directly impact the pay, status, and tenure of employees.Clinical Services and Hospital Consultation:Clinical services may include the application of discipline-specific theories, frameworks, and/or models of practice, which are applied during assessments, as well as group and individual treatment planning and intervention. The position engages in discipline-specific assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic intervention. Interventions are created, reviewed, modified, or discontinued as needed by the individual in care. In addition, this position will consult hospital-wide as needed and as referred by the various treatment teams to inform individualized treatment and/or programmatic needs. This position will develop and deliver hospital-wide in-service training regarding the work unit, as well as areas of specialization. This position may help facilitate and participate in community outings (requiring a valid Colorado driver’s license), hospital-wide activities, and training in hospital-approved crisis management techniques.
