Over one million people get around San Francisco and rely on us to ensure safe and reliable travel.Our Vision:Excellent transportation choices for San Francisco.Our Mission:We connect San Francisco through a safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation system.Under general supervision, the Electric Motor Repair Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of electric motors, generators, appliances, power tools, control auxiliaries and related electrical components.Examples of Important and Essential Duties:According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list:

Maintains, rebuilds, and/or repairs a variety of electric motors and other electrical devices, equipment, and machinery such as D.C. and A.C. single and three-phase motors, switches, controls, power tools, heaters, testing equipment, magnetic contactors, motor generators, batteries, and other related electrical equipment.

Inspects, diagnoses, and/or tests parts and equipment using megger, surge tester, hi-potential tester, bar to bar tester, and other test equipment in accordance with departmental safety standards.

Rewinds windings in stators, armatures and coils in AC and DC electric motors and equipment.

Cleans parts, tools, and equipment during the course of repair and performs routine tasks with appropriate cleaning materials/equipment.

Reads, understands and interprets maintenance manuals, schematic drawings and plans such as machine specifications, blueprints, layout work and drawings.

Drives other non-revenue vehicles as required.

Operates hand, pneumatic, portable power and machine tools such as, drill presses, grinders, wire crimpers, band saws, cutters and oxy-acetylene torches in accordance with departmental safety standards.

Maintains various written documents such as record of work performed and job reports.

Communicates and advises with supervisors, co-workers and others on assignments and other work-related matters.

Performs other related duties as needed.

Nature of Work: requires physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; and working with high voltage equipment. May also involve possible exposure to dust and chemical fumes, which may require wearing of a respirator and other personal protective equipment; and working in inclement weather and conditions where minor injuries may occur.These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.Experience:Six (6) years of full-time verifiable experience of which two (2) years must have been as a journey-level electric motor repair technician, where duties included the electrical and mechanical repair of all types of motors, motor-generators, coils, stator and armature windings, and troubleshooting control circuitry and related devices.Substitution:Training in a recognized four (4) year apprenticeship program in electric motor winding repair may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required non-journey-level experience on a year-for-year basis.License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.Note: Appointees to the position will be required to successfully complete the National Safety Council Forklift Truck Operators training course conducted by the SFMTA.Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. For your reference, a Multiple-Choice Test Preparation Manual is available on the DHR Website (http://www.sfdhr.org/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=18426) .Eligibility List/Score Report:A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Director of Transportation or the Civil Service Commission.The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12months and may be extended with the approval of the Director of Transportation.Medical Examination: Candidates who are being considered for appointment may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement will be placed under waiver until this requirement is met.
