Each program varies, but generally is a 4-year program, leading to a rewarding career dedicated to enhancing public transportation for America's finest city.
The Apprenticeship Programs are comprised of on-the-job training and formal classroom training. The formal classroom training is conducted on the employee's own time and may consist of attending classes at San Diego City College or other approved local junior colleges, as well as formal classes held on MTS premises. MTS covers the cost of tuition and materials. Apprentices attend classes while working full-time.
Apprentices must obtain a C or better in each class in order to remain in the program. Initially most of the shift work is during graveyard or swing shift hours. The trainers develop your schedule for you, so balancing work and school will be manageable. Good attendance to both work and classes is paramount in being successful in all Apprenticeship Programs at MTS.
At the conclusion of the 4-year Apprenticeship Program, the State of California awards the employee a Journeyman's Certificate as an Assistant Lineman. The employee is then enrolled in the Apprentice Lineman Program. At the conclusion of the Apprentice Lineman Program, the employee is awarded a Journeyman's Certificate as a Lineman. The employee is then eligible for promotion to Electro- Mechanic at MTS.
Wayside – Electro-Mechanical Technician Apprentice are responsible for the maintenance and inspection of Wayside railroad signal system, railroad grade crossings, railroad track switches, traction power generation and distribution, overhead bucket trucks and cranes, various lighting systems, ventilation systems, as well as pumps and pump controls.
Light Rail Vehicle – Electro-Mechanical Technician Apprentice are responsible for the preventative maintenance and safety inspections; mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic repairs; and diagnostics and troubleshooting on LRVs. Build and overhaul LRV subcomponents and systems. Provide emergency response to recover LRVs in the field. Perform preventive maintenance to supporting maintenance workshop equipment.
Trackperson are responsible for performing inspections and maintains the entire track and right-of-way structures of the San Diego Trolley, Inc. light rail vehicle system. Inspections and other track work is carried out within the guidelines established by regulating State and/or Federal agencies and must conform with Standard Operating Procedures in the Track Maintenance Manual.
Requirements:
18 years of age
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Possess and maintain a valid CA driver license

Wayside – Electro-Mechanical Technician Apprentice – $22.89 with incremental increases
Light Rail Vehicle – Electro-Mechanical Technician Apprentice – $22.89 with incremental increases
Trackperson - $22.89 with incremental increases
