This position will be located in Birmingham, AL
This position requires travel (up to 50%), including air travel.
This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
Some relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham
POSITION SUMMARYThis position is for a process engineer for the Southern Company Process Safety Team. General responsibilities include providing corporate support for company process safety programs such as Southern Company Generation Process Safety Management (PSM), Risk Management Plan (RMP) programs, and Southern Company Gas (GAS) process safety initiatives.This role will include aspects of process engineering as well as process safety. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to expand as the needs of the organization and the career development of the engineer evolve over time.This role will provide support to Southern Company Generation electric generating plants, battery energy storage projects, select R&D projects, as well as Southern Company Gas storage stations, compressor stations, metering and regulation (M&R) stations, liquified natural gas (LNG) plants, compressed natural gas (CNG), propane plants, renewable natural gas (RNG) processing facilities, across the United States.MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Apply working knowledge of hazardous substance processes including LNG, flammable gas, anhydrous ammonia, and chlorine.
Participate in and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA, HAZID, HAZOP, etc.), Hazard Mitigation Analyses (HMA), and Design Hazard Reviews.
Participate in and facilitate Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) and site meetings.
Administer the Management of Change (MOC) process within Southern Company Gas.
Facilitate meetings and processes to track action items resulting from MOCs, PHAs, and PSSRs.
Participate in and lead meetings for projects within Southern Company Gas, Generation, Technical Shared Services, and R&D, representing process safety.
Perform PSM/RMP audits and reviews.
Develop and review design basis documentation, technical specifications and recommendations.
Perform review of engineered drawings to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and internal safety standards and specifications.
Participate in design and process safety reviews of existing and new facilities.
Review and validate process equipment design specifications, safeguard specifications, commissioning and test data in support of PSSR process.
Deliver presentations and updates on process safety to various working groups.
Gather, analyze, and track leading and lagging indicators as metrics for process safety programs, including PSM and RMP.
Optimization and complex troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferred.
Facilitating HAZOPs, PSSRs, and MOC processes strongly preferred.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONSEducation:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering required. Chemical engineering discipline preferred. (REQUIRED)
Training completed and certifications in process safety preferred
Experience:
At least 2 years working in power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline or other heavy industrial processes would be desired
Designing hazardous substance processes, especially LNG, gas storage, anhydrous ammonia, chlorine, or other PSM / RMP covered systems preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Familiar with process safety and inherently safe design principles
Familiarity with the processes and operation of power plants, chemical plants, LNG plants, and natural gas processing plants
Familiarity with codes and standards applying to LNG and natural gas engineering, plant construction and operation.
Ability to successfully manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and priorities
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong presentation skills
Proficiency in Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps a plus.
Knowledge of fossil fueled-combustion systems, gas/liquid contacting systems, and/or pollutant emission control is desired.
Strong analytical ability to easily grasp advanced technical concepts and ideas, and be able to conduct problem solving and troubleshooting
