    Duties

    Summary

    The position is located in the Department of Veterans Health Administration, at the Sheridan VA Healthcare System in Food and Nutrition Services.DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.

    Responsibilities

    This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 08/08/2020. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be September 14th ,2020 with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.

    Duties may include setting up food service stations, serving on the tray assembly and cafeteria lines, assembling room service trays, sanitizing food service stations, dishes and equipment, delivering trays to units. Communicates effectively and tactfully with all levels of employees, patients, nursing and other medical center staff.

    Prepares, sets and serves food

    • Uses recipes and follows directions
    • Prepares simple food and beverages
    • Assembles patients' food trays and transports food carts
    • Collects trays after meals and returns carts to kitchen
    • Sets up glasses, silverware, meats, vegetables, salads
    • Covers and dates food according to standard procedures
    • Determines appropriate storage areas covering and dating
    • Determines appropriate rotation of inventory
    Cleans Equipment and Facility

    • Ensure cleanliness of serving line
    • Picks up and returns soiled tray and dishes from patient's rooms
    • Unloads and scrapes trays, plates, bowls, domes, inserts and utensils for washing
    • Washes carts, racks and other kitchen equipment
    • Washes dishes, pots, pans by hand or by use of mechanical equipment
    • Washes floors, walls, windows in kitchen, dining and storage areas, office, hallways and latrines

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    Physical Effort

    The work involves heavy physical effort in frequently lifting or moving items up to 40 pounds such as lifting bags of potatoes, containers of milk, etc., pushing heavy carts of silverware and glassware, or moving trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. When required to lift or move heavier items, assistance is available. The work may also involve scouring and/or scrubbing large-sized kitchen utensils, or operating powered cleaning equipment on ladders. Work requires prolonged periods of standing and walking along with frequent bending, stooping, pulling and pushing.

    Working Conditions

    The work is performed in a kitchen area which frequently is hot and humid due to cooking and dishwashing activities. The work area is well lighted but noisy from food service activities. While working in cooking areas, incumbent is subject to the possibility of slipping on wet floors, skin irritations from harsh-dishwashing liquids, burns, cuts, bruises, and eye injury. Incumbent is also subject to varied temperature extremes while inside walk-in refrigerator or freezer units. Incumbent must wear protective clothes, shoes, gloves, earplugs, and/or other safety and hygiene equipment as required by food handling and safety standards when performing assigned tasks.

    Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
