    Duties

    Summary

    This is a Medical Technician position, located at the Riverton, WY. Community Based Outpatient Clinic, in Sheridan, WY. You will be responsible for the phlebotomy workload of the CBOC 80% of time.

    Responsibilities

    Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Performs phlebotomy on patients;

    • Provides processing of specimens;
    • Provides package specimens for shipment to the laboratory;
    • Performs inventory and replenish laboratory supplies;
    • Performs glucose meter checks for patients, observing patient technique and verifying acceptable operational status of meter;
    • Assists with direct patient care as needed completing duties for initial contact;
    • Collects peripheral blood by venipuncture using various types of syringes and needles;
    • Assists in maintaining the workload and other administrative reports;
    • Performs inventory and replenish laboratory supplies in the blood drawing;
    • Ensures the proper specimen was collected, patient identification on the tube is correct, accessioning the specimens, proper action for the specimen;
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

    :

    In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.[CLD(1]

    Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Medical Technician GS-5. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS 4 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions. Additional Experience in : phlebotomy on patients, processing of specimens, package specimens for shipment to the laboratory. Performs inventory and replenish laboratory supplies, glucose meter checks for patients, observing patient technique and verifying acceptable operational status of meter. Collects peripheral blood by venipuncture using various types of syringes and needles. Performs inventory and replenish laboratory supplies in the blood drawing.     EDUCATION:

    You must have Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Medical Technician position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS -5 grade level. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.)

    COMBINATION:

    You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level. Excess of the first 60semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.

    Physical Requirements: Mental and physical dexterity and the extensive use of the hands and eyes are required. I Requires sitting, standing, bending, walking, lifting, listening, talking, and some climbing of stairs. Ability to function reliably under emergent and stressful conditions. Work is predominantly performed in the clinical area. Use of safety engineering controls is mandatory.

    Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
