GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Counsels advise and assist Wyoming Veterans and their dependents regarding their eligibility in obtaining benefits and entitlements provided for them by State and Federal laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
  • Investigates and conducts interviews, assists in the preparation and follow-up of application for State and Federal benefits, reviews and files claims for Veteran's benefits, follows MOU actions with Veteran's Service Organizations and other State agencies for referral of inquiries, claims, and actions.

  • Conducts public relations by disseminating general information for the outreach program by development and participation in radio broadcasts, newspaper releases, and public speaking engagements to interested groups.

  • Coordinates with various public affairs elements of the Wyoming Military Department.

  • Attends semi-annual training and quarterly professional development sessions with a goal to obtain VA accreditation through the WVC.

  • Attends meetings and other activities of Veteran's Service Organizations as assigned, discusses the efforts of the Wyoming Veterans Commission.

  • Coordinates activities or services with Veteran's Service Organizations and Veteran Service Providers.

  • Conducts briefings and classes as requested.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those with a bachelor's degree in business, public administration, social work, sociology, psychology, PLUS two years of professional work experience in business, public administration, determining eligibility for program benefits, or providing services to clients.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of computers, computer databases, and word processing systems

  • Knowledge of services, counseling, and advocacy

  • Knowledge of State and Federal Veteran's benefits, programs, and services

  • Knowledge of VA disability and pension claim processing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Social Services)

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Victim or Client Services)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Victim or Client Services)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

None

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The incumbent will have extensive travel throughout their service area and the State, conducting outreach to Veterans and their families. State vehicle will be provided for travel. Travel may be as much as 75% of work time.

  • Position requires long periods of sitting/standing.

  • Position may require occasional lifting of heavy objects.

  • Position may require walking up to half a mile.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt

  • Must obtain a favorable National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index (NCIC III)

  • Must become VA accredited within 1 year of employment

  • Please attach a DD214 with your application to be eligible for Veteran's points

  • Must pass a background investigation for VA Accreditation
