Job SummaryThe Arts & Entertainment/Features Reporter is responsible for writing two to three stories per week and creating other material for the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, primarily for the ToDo section, but also for other sections as needed. The A&E/Features Reporter, based in Cheyenne, works closely with the WTE assistant managing editor and managing editor to ensure deadlines and other duties are met.

Wyoming’s capital city is a growing community at the northern end of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, with a rapidly expanding arts and entertainment scene. In recent months, new concert venues and entertainment options have been popping up all over, which makes this an exciting time to step into this position.

In addition to providing award-winning coverage of arts and entertainment in Cheyenne and the rest of Laramie County, the journalist in this position has occasional opportunities to travel to Denver and other Colorado communities to cover large-scale art exhibits, festivals and trade shows. We also work with our sister publication in Laramie on coverage connected to the University of Wyoming.

Journalists who have continued to develop their skills in our newsroom have gone on to work for larger publications such as the The Desert Sun, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Denver Post, among others.

Job FunctionsThe successful candidate must be a flexible self-starter, attentive to detail, diplomatic and able to multitask. This position will work with different personality types and several communities. Candidates for this position should have strong interpersonal skills and customer orientation, and exhibit an ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts as a team member.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing a minimum of three arts and entertainment stories a week for the weekend ToDo section

  • Maintaining the arts and entertainment/community calendar

  • Collecting, editing and preparing milestones (birth announcements, anniversaries, etc.) for publication

  • Selecting and editing entertainment-focused wire content for the ToDo section

  • Working with designers based in another state to ensure stories are placed and displayed properly

  • Collaborating with the WTE staff photographer to ensure there is art for every story

  • Contributing news features to the A section, as needed

  • Help maintain the paper's social media presence by scheduling daily posts

Requirements

Essential Functions:
  • Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with company core values.

  • Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with internal and external contacts.

Minimum Requirements:The successful candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the print or digital media industries.

Technology SkillsAbility to quickly learn our software, which includes the TownNews BLOX Content Management System.

EducationBachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent work experience preferred.

The fringe benefits include medical (split between employer and employee), dental and vision options (employee paid). There are three company-sponsored benefits, including short-term disability, long-term disability and a term life insurance policy. The company pays for these six major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day). In addition, employees accrue 3.33 hours of paid leave per pay period in the first year of employment (80 hours) and increasing to 5.0 hours per pay period (120 hours) after their one-year anniversary of employment. The company has the option of making a discretionary match to the 401K retirement plan after year end.
