GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

In Casper, Wyoming, the District Attorney's Office has an immediate opening for an Assistant District Attorney. The position handles the prosecution of misdemeanor level offenses. The position prepares a variety of court documents and argues motions before trial court; conducts jury and bench trials; confers with investigative agencies; plans, coordinates, and institutes activities related to the prosecution of misdemeanor cases; coordinates case investigations with law enforcement agencies; checks instructs or directs the work of their assigned legal assistant as necessary.

Candidates must currently be licensed to practice in Wyoming and be in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar, and must demonstrate a high initiative and responsibility level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
  • Initiates prosecution of individuals for misdemeanor cases.

  • Reviews investigative reports and works with law enforcement officers and agencies to ensure that all of the elements of the offense have been investigated and ensures that the defendant's rights are not violated.

  • Represents the State of Wyoming in jury trials and bench trials.

  • Confers and negotiates with defense attorneys on pending cases, using communication and persuasive skills to achieve a fair resolution of the case.

  • Meets with crime victims through the Victim/Witness Coordinator assigned to the case and ensures their rights are observed and that they have an opportunity to participate in the criminal justice system.

  • Handles core assignments: rules making, contracts, documents review, client counseling, legal research, opinion writing, appellate briefs, pre-trial assignments (dispositive motions, discovery), trial assignments (preparing witnesses, exhibits, assists in developing & executing strategy, contested cases), oral arguments, settlements.

  • Handles a variety of moderate to serious legal matters and ability to resolve moderate cases with general supervision; assist in the preparation of more complex legal matters.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of criminal laws and jury instructions

  • Skills in organization and effective use of time and resources

  • Communication skills

  • Leadership and decision making skills

  • Teamwork with law enforcement; community agencies, staff and court personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Juris Doctorate

Experience:

2-5 years of relevant legal experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

License to practice law in Wyoming

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position requires sitting for long periods of time
