This is a full-time 8 hour exempt position that is all year round.

The job of Employee Relations Specialist was established for the purpose/s of providing assistance to the Human Resources division in interpreting and applying federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations to ensure maximum benefits for employees. This job reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Essential Functions

  • Advises managers and employees on the interaction of leave laws (e.g. paid time off, workers compensation, short-term disability, long-term disability, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with district policies and mandated legal requirements.
  • Attends legal hearings (e.g. Worker's Compensation, unemployment, etc.) for the purpose of providing testimony and monitoring proceedings.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. district payroll and human resources departments, insurance providers, physicians, lawyers, state and federal agencies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with district policies and mandated legal requirements.
  • Communicates with employees regarding their needs for leave and/or modified work schedules for the purpose of making employees aware of their responsibilities of any documentation and notice required to qualify for and to take leave.
  • Coordinates employee leave benefits (e.g. FMLA, LTD, Sick Bank, ADA, Secondary Insurance Claims, and Workers Compensation programs, unemployment reporting, sick leave donations, etc.) for the purpose of providing maximum coverage to employees within contract and legal specifications under district guidelines.
  • Delivers training to district personnel (e.g. compliance information/instruction

materials, procedures, methods, etc.) for the purpose of addressing compliance issues and injury causative activities.

  • Develops a wide variety of written materials (e.g. forms, procedures, reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Implements and interprets management policies and operating practices for the purpose of achieving department objectives and ensuring compliance with administrative requirements.
  • Maintains a wide variety of records (e.g. provider contracts, claim files, employee records, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or documentation while ensuring strict and complete
  • Maintains strict (or complete) confidentiality on personnel and student issues (e.g. personnel records, medical records, surveillance videos and images, student data, confidential communication, etc.) for the purpose of protecting personal information for staff and students.
  • Monitors federal, state, and local statutes and related governing employment guidelines for the purpose of recommending board policy and administrative regulation, and standard operating procedures revisions.
  • Oversees the return-to-work process for employees returning from leave (e.g. extended FMLA, workers compensation, etc.) for the purpose of providing guidance on processes for returning to work.

Education: Bachelor's degree in job-related area

Continuing Educ./Training: Ability to obtain PHR (Professional Human Resource) certificate
