Alliant Energy has an outstanding opportunity for a Power Systems Data Analyst II to join the team in Madison, WI. We now have access to more data than we have ever had, and how this data is accessed, visualized, or shared drives its usefulness to our company. In this role, you will perform a variety of analytical work in data extraction, administration, and analysis to support engineering, project management, and other groups as requested. This work is critical in driving the decisions we are making in building and operating our distribution system, including renewable resource management. This position may be filled at a higher level depending upon candidate qualifications.

The ideal candidate will have strong data analytical skills, proficiency with Power BI and experience with SQL, VBA, and Excel. Familiarity with Python is a plus.

This position is located in Madison, WI and offers flexibility from a hybrid work from home/in office to full time in office.

Recent team projects:
  • Utilizing Power BI to create a small capital projects dashboard that retrieves data via query utilizing joins to access multiple tables. Data is refreshed twice daily.
  • Utilizing Power BI to create a large capital projects dashboard and project tracker that retrieves data via query utilizing joins to access multiple tables. Data is refreshed twice daily.
Current Team project:

Creation of a Substation and Feeder dashboard that retrieves and analyzes data from several live and static databases (facilities, maintenance, load, Distributed Energy Resources, etc) and presents this content in several different ways and with varying levels of detail depending on the end user needs. This will involve working with and organizing data from user spreadsheets and databases to facilitate use by this tool.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops scalable and innovative approaches to extracting, managing, scrubbing, analyzing, and presenting data, while using customer and business knowledge to assess validity.
  • Optimizes data models, through normalization when appropriate, and performs data profiling and analysis to assist in understanding the data.
  • Conducts requirements gathering in the development of tools, processes, and visuals in support of engineering and project management.
  • Maintains Electrical system, Gas system, and projects data for reporting and consumption by the Engineering department. This includes tracking of results and development of visual tools and dashboards.
  • Development and implementation of procedures and communication tools to coordinate execution of multi-year plan. Including with Transmission Owners (TOs).
  • Administers the Electric Capital Projects Database and PI Historian archive database configuration.
  • Experienced working relationships with other department peers as appropriate (GIS, Asset Management, IT, etc.). Participates on teams as assigned.
  • Creates Power BI tools and Dashboards utilizing database connections and joins along with static data in Excel.
  • Maintains and improves Excel based engineering tools.
  • Encouraged to develop and improve new and existing tools and work practices using their knowledge and the resources available.
  • Experienced collaboration with others responsible for analytics.
  • Provides mentorship to less experienced Power Systems Analysts.
  • Maintains standard operating procedures for model development.
  • Owns the development of structure and format for organizing planning records and documentation.

Job Qualifications

We are looking for:
  • Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis inComputer Science, Information Technology, Data Analytics, Engineering or related field is preferred.
  • 2+ years of related experience
  • Experience with programming languages (i.e., SQL, VBA), basic understanding on data integration, statistics concepts and regression analysis
  • Experience with Visualization Tools (e.g, Power BI) required

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment
  • Self-directed and able to plan/prioritize tasks
