To understand our world and the universe, the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) develops, deploys, and supports instrumentation and software systems for research purposes across the world and beyond! SSEC's history of developing a diverse set of instruments ranges from the first weather satellite, to aircraft instruments monitoring the atmosphere, and to ground based atmospheric observing instrumentation. The challenge of operating research systems, in these environments, requires a broad set of disciplines and skills from the team of people involved. This dynamic environment requires us to learn about new scientific advances, systems and technologies on a regular basis. SSEC's mission supports faculty and academic staff led research with the development, fabrication, and implementation of experiments and new scientific research tools for national and international use.

This position is located in the Scientific Computing Operational Area of SSEC. The successful candidate will work with a team using a high-performance data ingest, archive, and processing system as part of the NASA Science Investigator-Led Processing System (SIPS) for the Atmosphere discipline of the Suomi NPP Science Team (https://sips.ssec.wisc.edu). The Atmosphere SIPS at SSEC is responsible for ingesting, storing, processing, and delivering data products from the VIIRS sensor onboard the Suomi NPP environmental satellite in earth orbit. The computer systems supporting this effort currently include more than 2500 CPU cores for data processing configured as a high-throughput computing system; more than 10 Petabytes of storage in a cluster filesystem, high performance networking, and a job management system controlled by a relational database. The Atmosphere SIPS currently ingests and produces more than 2 Terabytes of data per day for NASA.https://jobs.hr.wisc.edu/en-job/510810/linux-system-administrator
