POSITION TITLE: PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT IN CHARGE OF CEMETERY AND PARKS

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Public Works Assistant works under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent. The Public Works Assistant is directly responsible for the maintenance and appearance of the cemetery, city parks and other city owned property. Must be able to work independently as well as under direct supervision of Public Works Superintendent. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and be proficient in operating lawn mowers, snowplows and other equipment as directed by the PW Supt.

DUTIES OF PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT

1. Mow, fertilize, weed, sidewalk edging and tree trimming at cemetery, city parks and all other city owned property.

2. Maintain and repair/replace/winterize sprinkler systems and other irrigation systems as needed.

3. Assist in maintenance and repair of Palouse public pool and pool house.

4. Prevent/identify potential pest issues and take appropriate action to remedy any problems.

5. Maintain and perform repairs on lawn mowers, pickups and other small equipment as needed.

6. Maintain and perform repairs on various park and cemetery equipment, including but not limited to: public restrooms, tables, benches, garbage cans, playground equipment and memorials.

7. Operate snowplow to clear city streets and sidewalks. May require long hours and late nights/early mornings during inclement weather.

8. Various painting, including but not limited to: crosswalks, parking stripes, garbage cans, picnic tables and benches.

9. Remove(spray) weeds and other debris from curbs, city streets and city rights of way.

10. Change banners on streetlights lining main street to coincide with events throughout the year.

11. Report activities and propose future projects and/or expenditures to the PW Supt.

12. Keep time and material records for each job.

13. Keep inventory of supplies on hand.

14. Provide hands on support to Public Works Superintendent as needed, including but not limited to: water system maintenance and operations, water and sewer line maintenance and replacement, locate underground utility lines, maintenance and repair of all city owned equipment, digging urn burials at cemetery, daily cleaning of restrooms and garbage removal from cans along Main Street.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must possess valid driver’s license.

2. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies on occasion as determined by Public Works Superintendent.

3. Must be available to work an occasional short weekend shift checking the sewer plant, water wells, garbage cans along Main St, pool and public restrooms.

3. Must acquire and maintain a Washington State Public Pesticide Applicator License within the first year of employment.

4. Must be able to perform manual work for extended periods in all weather conditions.

5. Must be able to lift 75 lbs.

COMPENSATION

Base Salary $38,400 - $42,300 DOE with benefits package including medical, dental, access to Voluntary Employee Benefits Association (VEBA) account and city contribution equal to 9% of base salary to government 457 retirement account.
