The OpportunityWSDOT HQ Mainframe Technical Support Team is currently seeking an IT System Administration Senior Specialist to serve with the Mainframe Technical Support team in Olympia, WA. The Mainframe Technical Support team is responsible for keeping the enterprise-wide IBM mainframe, operating system, and all system software and hardware running at peak performance with an uptime of 99.5 percent. Responsibilities include requirements analysis, solution design, implementation, coordination, and ongoing support. The functionality provided by a highly available mainframe platform is leveraged extensively by other organizations within the Information Technology Division (ITD) to host the mainframe applications and services that they provide to end users and also by other WSODT divisions to deliver their programs. This position serves as the agency’s designated highest-level technical expert supporting the mainframe operating system software and subsystems, including installation, configuration, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and performance monitoring. This position is also the technical lead for mainframe Disaster Recovery (DR).

What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Mainframe Support Technician will:
  • Represent the team and often Infrastructure Services as a whole in committee meetings with peers, management, and business representatives.
  • Provide advice to management and peers regarding enterprise mainframe solutions and strategies.
  • Provide agency expert level support for the mainframe operating system.
  • Install, configure, and enhance the mainframe operating system software (zOS) and applicable subsystems.
  • Serve as team lead on projects that integrate new hardware and/or software technologies.
  • Provide agency expert level support for Continuance of Operations (COOP) for the mainframe operating system.
  • Serve as team lead for the mainframe disaster recovery area by initiating actions that improve process.
  • Administer as necessary system backups to assure appropriate data is available for offsite recovery by modifying jobs and monitoring execution.
  • Review hardware and software annually to maintain system synchronization with Mainframe as a Service (MFaaS) provider.
  • Consult with IT management, technical support staff, and system analysts regarding the functions and capabilities of the mainframe operating system software and hardware.

QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Ten (10) years of advanced training and programming experience supporting MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) systems.
  • Five (5) years of advanced training or experience using System Modification Program Extended (SMP/E).
  • One (1) year project management skills.
  • Expert skill level in personal computer (PC) use and standard PC software.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Five (5) years of advanced training or experience supporting the Customer Information Control System (CICS).
  • Five (5) years of advanced training or experience using the Basic Assembler Language (BAL).
  • Five (5) years of advanced training or experience using Job Control Language (JCL).
  • Three (3) years scripting experience with Rexx, Clist
  • College degree or significant, demonstrable written and verbal communication skills.
