This is a full-time, year-round position with appointment to the Facilities & Safety Department. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager. An HVAC Specialist must possess a variety of advanced skills in HVAC installation, service, and preventative maintenance in a commercial setting. You will be responsible for the air quality systems from installation to end-of-life by performing installation, maintenance, warranty, and emergency repairs. You will also repair, maintain, and install refrigeration equipment such as fridges, freezers, and ice machines. To be successful in this role, customer satisfaction, safety, and comfort should be your top priorities. Ideal candidates will be patient and have excellent organizational and troubleshooting skills. This position will also assist with building maintenance tasks as needed. The schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday – Thursday, 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM with a 30-minute paid lunch. The schedule may vary depending on department needs. Afterhours and overtime will be required as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties are performed on campus and off-site as needed. Working effectively and collaboratively in a team environment is a must. Working conditions are as follows:
Working indoors and outdoors is required. When working outdoors, will be subject to inclement weather. The work will be strenuous at times and will include lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders and stairs, operating lift equipment, maneuvering in tight and awkward spaces, and standing, bending, sitting, reaching, crouching, stooping, and kneeling for long periods of time. Risks include injury from falls, burns, electrical hazards, cuts, and exposure to inclement weather. Workers must follow strict safety procedures to avoid injuries.
This is a non-exempt, full-time, regular position.
WAGE RANGE: $30 - $35 Per Hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five (5) years of experience as an HVAC technician in installation and service work.
06A Electrical License (must be eligible to obtain within 180 days of employment).
EPA Universal Certification (must obtain within 180 days of employment).
Working knowledge of boilers, heat pumps, cooling towers, chillers, roof top package units, mini splits, water source / geothermal heat pumps, ERV systems, and DDC controls.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Proficient in operating a computer.
Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Must be willing to consent to a drug test.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Certificate of completion from an accredited career school in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration.
NATE Certified.
Documented operator experience with Alerton and Niagra N4.
Documented experience with Microsoft Outlook and Word and computerized database programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Have good attendance and the ability to work well with others.
Knowledge of the fundamental operational functionality of commercial HVAC/R equipment.
Knowledge of installation and layout requirements for equipment, duct work, and fittings.
Ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot problems with refrigerant, electrical, and duct systems on HVAC equipment.
Possess good analytical skills and pay attention to detail.
Must be highly organized with good follow-through skills.
Excellent customer service skills with desire to exceed customer expectations.
Ability to work in tight spaces such as attics, small closets, and/or crawl spaces.
Ability to lift 50 pounds, to push, pull, carry or maneuver heavier items.
Occasionally work from heights 15 feet or higher above ground.
Have good visual acuity to see and focus close, distance, and peripheral vision with normal depth perception.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Install, monitor, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of HVAC systems or integral parts of mechanical equipment such as boilers, heat pumps, cooling towers, chillers, roof top package units, mini splits, water source heat pumps, DDC controls, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, etc.
Manage a comprehensive database of the school’s HVAC systems to identify and track campus equipment, preventative maintenance, and repair logs.
Evaluate HVAC systems for efficiency, operation, and dependability. Recommend equipment repairs and replacement options, develop project scope of work, and identify utility incentive options available to support campus operations, occupant satisfaction, and energy efficacy goals.
Interpret and analyze floor plans and technical diagrams to ensure the accurate maintenance and operation of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. This involves identifying system components, understanding their layout, and following detailed schematics to perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and necessary repairs.
Collaborate with vendors to obtain equipment quotes, discounts, and project bids.
Manage HVAC contractors performing work on campus, from project start to close-out, to ensure target goals are achieved and work is completed satisfactorily. Communicate with HVAC contractors regarding scope changes, installation or execution concerns, or unsatisfactory work in a professional and timely manner to prevent scope creep, cost increases, and delayed project completion.
Respond to reports of HVAC system concerns such as too hot, too cold, air flow, sounds, smells, leaks, and system alarms in a prompt and professional manner. Communicate with occupants effectively to meet their needs and support a comfortable learning and working environment.
Manage an inventory of all HVAC tools and chemicals on-hand to ensure proper resources are available to carry out the functions of this position and to support the HVAC systems operation.
Collaborate with faculty to lead, direct, and oversee HVAC students during the removal and installation of HVAC equipment on campus to ensure the safety, performance, and outcomes desired.
Install copper refrigerant lines, pull vacuums on refrigerant systems, solder, and braze.
Install and program all versions of thermostats and run low voltage communication wire.
Design, fabricate, and install various ducts and duct fittings to ensure proper sizing, flow, and connections.
Properly connect gas lines to heating equipment.
Perform start-ups on heating and cooling systems, and other components to ensure proper operation.
Remove and recycle old equipment, properly recover and recycle refrigerant, and dispose of trash.
Perform building maintenance tasks as needed.
Adhere to standard operating procedures, laws, and regulations to ensure safety and compliance.
Skillfully operate, maintain, and repair a diverse range of manual and power tools, ensuring all equipment is used safely and efficiently.
Load, unload, and deliver shipments using a forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck.
Remove snow and ice from parking lots, sidewalks, and buildings, during and after business hours using shovels, snow blowers, and plow trucks, repeatedly and for prolonged periods of time.
Perform event set-up and clean-up.
Secure facilities, equipment, and property as required.
Respond to FMX requests in a prompt and courteous manner.
