Job Description

At the direction of the Permitting Team Lead within the Project Development department, the Senior Development Manager – Energy Storageis responsible for overseeing the lifecycle of the site development and permitting processes for stand-alone energy storage projects.

In this role, youwill own and manage the activitiessurrounding the management and oversight of both external and internal resources required to permit utility-scale stand-alone energy storage projects. These stand-alone energy-storage projects are not directly connected to another renewable energy project like a wind or solar project.In this role, you must possess the experience and skills required to independently lead the land-use permitting of multi-million-dollar development projects, related to stand-alone energy storage. The position’s work scope will encompass the path to permitting a project from early-stage development to post-permit requisites.

Our ideal candidate will come into this role with a genuine passion for renewable energy, education in a related field, and at least 6 years of successful renewable energy project development or land-use permitting experience. Our ideal candidate has a solid track record of successfully achieving a land-use permit, exemplary teamwork, and enjoys working on a dynamic and diverse cross-departmental team. You understand how to drive projects through key development milestones as they relate to permitting and can do so independently. You can strategically design successful plans while also interpreting and analyzing the technical intricacies of a project. You are fully capable of understanding state and local land-use permitting requirements, create schedules surrounding the permitting process, write applications, work with internal teams and outside counsel on obtaining permits that will allow for the successful construction and operation of utility-scale renewable energy projects. Our ideal candidate has extensive experience writing permit applications, looking for inconsistencies in permit requirements and solution oriented in driving the permitting process forward.

As a project management professional, you are extremely organized, are proficient managing external vendors, are able to travel to proposed project sites, and have no problem planning for and meeting deadlines for large multi-faceted projects. Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Development Manager, Energy Storage is responsible for overseeing the lifecycle of the site development and permitting processes for stand-alone energy storage projects. This includes:

  • Represent Apex by understanding, overseeing, and managing the site development and permitting requirements of stand-alone energy storage projects.
  • Travel to project sites, meet with government agencies, forge relationships with community leaders and other stakeholders. Attend land-use permit meetings.
  • Secure new site control with internal land acquisition team or real estate agents.
  • Lead site diligence in conjunction with internal teams including energy storage, critical issue screening, environmental studies, land management, property tax matters, GIS, engineering, public engagement, etc.
  • Manage scope of work and review work product for consultants and contractors providing real estate and permitting services.
  • Compile and manage project site development and permitting budgets and schedules.
  • Provide reports and presentations to management including updates on project permitting status and changes to permitting regulations.
  • Support the negotiation of power purchase and asset agreements as it pertains to permitting
  • Work cross-departmentally to maintain clear communication and smooth collaboration at all stages of the project development process as it pertains to site control and permitting

Qualifications

To succeed as a Senior Development Manager, Energy Storageat Apex Clean Energy, you’ll need to display excellence within the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate degree (master’s preferred) in development related field with a strong academic record
  • 6+ years of utility-scale energy development or land-use permitting experience; direct wind, solar, or storageexperience strongly preferred
  • Extensive experience with county and state land-use permitting processes and requirements
  • Exprience creatingschedules surrounding the permitting process
  • Extensive experience writing permit applications, looking for inconsistencies in permit requirements and solution oriented in driving the permitting process forward
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and lead multi-disciplinary teams while earning buy-in from team members to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of permits
  • Experience managing consultants
  • Solid track record in project management and project management practices
  • Strong organization skills and ability to handle time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a rapidly changing environment
  • Demonstrable experience managing a number of large scale complex projects simultaneously
  • Strong work ethic and ability to productively take ownership of permitting tasks while communicating collaboratively throughout the project’s life cycle.
  • Adept at problem-solving
  • Articulate with the ability to lead and assist with management, client, and public presentations
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong passion for renewable energy
  • Adept with Microsoft Office Suite (required), Outlook (required), and Smartsheets (preferred)
  • Exemplary standards of safety, honor, ethics, quality, communication, and productivity.
  • Willing and able to travel 40%-50%
  • Location: Willing and able to work from our Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia or our satellite office in Minneapolis, MN.Remote work will be considered for the right candidate.
