In an era of dynamic change in space, Aerospace is addressing a generation of complex challenges. We operate the only federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) committed exclusively to the space enterprise. Our technical experts span every discipline of space-related science and engineering.

Main-mission communication satellites, wideband links, command and telemetry, and terrestrial networks, along with their enabling technologies, are the domain of the Communication Technologies and Engineering Division. The division comprises all aspects, from architecture to implementation; our engineers work directly with corporate customers to ensure robust and resilient communications.

The Communications and Signal Analysis Department (CSAD) at The Aerospace Corporation perform analysis, modeling, simulation, and prototyping in the areas of satellite microwave and laser communications, signal processing, microwave photonics, emitter geolocation, and collection/processing techniques and solutions. We also advise customers on technical matters and advanced technology solutions. This position is 100% onsite in Chantilly, VA.

The Associate Director provides leadership, planning, and direction of technical staff and operations for the Communications & Signal Analysis Department. CSAD is a component of the Communication Systems and Agile Processing Subdivision within the Communication Technologies and Engineering Division. This department primarily supports National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), U.S. Space Force, Civil/Commercial, and other US government customers. CSAD aids in developing and acquiring innovative communication systems both in space and terrestrially. The department provides expertise at the payload level for both radio and laser wavelengths, and this expertise extends up to the communication link level in complexity.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Engaging with staff, management, and customers
  • Work with management to establish the organization's objectives, structure, staff, and resources
  • Participate in budget planning and allocation of resources
  • Report organization's activities, progress, and achievements through written and oral reports to management, staff, and customers
  • Promote and market the organization's capabilities to customers while gathering insight regarding customer technology and staffing plans
  • Seek and identify opportunities for new business and opportunities
  • Participate in recruiting activities such as visiting universities and attending conferences
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor staff to meet customer demands and organizational objectives
  • Conduct staff performance reviews and recommend performance improvement, career development, salary, and promotion actions
  • Assign and coordinate work activities within the organization
  • Monitor work of staff to ensure task completion with appropriate quality and within cost and schedule
  • Monitor and direct the organization's security processes, compliance, and safety awareness
  • Participate in technical reviews and assessments
  • Plan and manage department research activities
  • Ensure the technical quality of deliverables (reports, software, services, etc.) to customers, and steward the knowledge management of the organization

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree obtained in Electrical Engineering required
  • Active TS/SSBI or TS/SCI clearance required
  • Minimum of 8-years of progressively responsible engineering experience in satellite communication systems and signal processing
  • Strong technical leadership skills with demonstrated project management experience
  • Experience working with various Aerospace and US government space program offices
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with corporate, customer, and contractor management and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both with customers and peers, via conversation, email, and presentation
  • Experience in successful team building and leadership
  • Demonstrated effective mentorship, career development, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel as needed, typically once per quarter

  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering
  • Strong expertise across the department's core technical domain specialties
  • Knowledge of NRO programs especially regarding communications and signal interception systems
  • Aerospace line management experience
