MITRE is seeking a Space Weather Subject Matter Expert (SME) with expansive direct programmatic and program formulation, complex enterprise systems, system engineering and space program cradle to grave experience to provide technical guidance to high level leadership and to technical teams in areas of strategic planning, formulation, definition and development of projects, spacecraft and remote sensor, LSI, and ground segment elements. A key aspect of this role is helping the sponsor form partnerships both domestic and international. Partnerships play a critical role in achieving the space weather mission objectives. MITRE supports the technical evaluation, definition, and coordination of potential collaborations with partners. To s uc c eed in this p o sition, the candidate should have expansive direct experience from complex enterprises to technical knowledge and experience in space weather science, formulation of new programs/projects, space and ground systems, remote sensing, and enterprise architecture evaluations. T he candidate should be well versed i n emerging supporting technic a l areas and must have exc e llent c o m m uni c ation s k ill s , b oth w r i t ten an d ve r b a l . The candidate must be c o mf o r ta b le w or king with space experts, engineering s t af f , senior sponsor leadership , and making compelling presentations to both technical and management executives. Key Functions I n this r o l e , you will:Support the formulation of joint agency programs/projects.

Provide expert space weather technical recommendations and oversight for all aspects of the space weather Observations program.

Provide recommendations to support the definition of observatory including the sensors and subsystems, trade studies, integration and test planning, and operations planning for future missions.

Provide system engineering expert advice to support the development of requirements and interfaces definition both internal and external, and verification and validation.

Review and provide assessment of contractor cost, schedule, risk, and technical performance.

Participate in Test/Failure Review Boards.

Provide engineering and acquisition support through recommendations and expert advice for the following: life cycle management of space systems to include planning, procurement, integration and test, launch, and on-orbit activation of the spacecraft/observatory(s).

Identify all aspects of risks from the program to projects including space, launch and ground elements, recommend and assess mitigations plans, support mitigation execution and participate in risk boards.

Review and evaluate detailed functional and environmental test plans and procedures for instrument, space, ground and launch segments and witness test execution.

Participate, review and coordinate partnership collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications:Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

Required Qualifications:Recognized expertise in formulating new joint program/projects from cradle to grave, including joint programs and partnerships.

Extensive complex enterprise system engineering knowledge and experience in space programs.

Recognized expertise in the space weather science and observing communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

15+ years of experience in diverse, technical roles across the space weather domain. You must be able to speak from experience.

PhD in Physics, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.

Experience in a consulting role; advising government; confidently and diplomatically advocating science, technology, and program directions.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Comfortable and effective interacting with the technical staff and researchers, through mid-level management to senior executives and appointees.
