Providence is calling a Surgical Technologist - Labor / Delivery (0.0 FTE, Nights) to Providence Saint Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR.

We are seeking a Surgical Technologist - Labor / Delivery who will work closely with all members of the surgical team to provide direct patient care in an effort to optimize positive surgical outcomes.

Assist the surgeon and surgical team during the procedure by providing the appropriate sutures, supplies, instruments and equipment.

Maintain proper sterile technique during the procedure.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities :

Case Preparation :

Review scheduled cases in advance to provide equipment and supplies appropriate to the procedure

Anticipate each individual surgeon’s needs by being cognizant of changes and preparing in advance additional equipment, instruments, sutures and other supplies necessary for the procedures across all specialties

Work with circulating nurse in preparing room, equipment and opening supplies

Practice sterile technique during scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and preparation of surgical equipment and supplies; maintain sterile technique practices and surgical conscience throughout duration of surgical procedure

Assist the Surgeon by :

Draping the patient

Passing surgical instruments, supplies and equipment

Sponging or suctioning in the operative field

Anticipating steps of surgical procedure to avoid delay

Apply electrocautery as directed

Connecting drain to suction apparatus

Applying dressing to closed wound

Under direct supervision of surgeon :

Cut suture material

Hold retractors or surgical instruments for site exposure

Sponge and suction in the surgical field

Assist in wound homeostasis and skin closure

Ensure patient safety by :

Participation of proper Universal Protocol / Safe Surgery Checklist

Maintaining correct count of instruments, sponges, needles and miscellaneous items with the collaboration of the circulating nurse, according to GOP

Immediately reporting / replacing malfunctioning equipment

Reporting abnormal conditions and performing effectively during emergency situations; assisting physicians and nurses

Collecting and managing specimens on the sterile field; assuring proper identification and labeling of specimens before passing off to circulating nurse

Continuous quality improvement and training on advanced procedures and techniques

Maintaining sterile technique

Observing electrocautery safety policy

Participating in ensuring correct patient position

Accurately transport non-scheduled medications to appropriate procedural areas

Appropriately drawing up, labeling, and verifying medications and solutions on the sterile field under the direction of a MD or Surgical RN

Stewardship of resources :

Care for surgical equipment and instrumentation during and immediately following a surgical procedure

Organize and prioritize work in an efficient and cost effective manner

Limit waste and charges to the patient by opening only supplies that are needed

Qualifications :

Required qualifications for this position includes :

High School Diploma -OR- GED

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Qualified candidates must possess at least 1 of the following :

Completion of a surgical technologist program accredited by a national accreditation organization -and- holds a current surgical technologist certification issued by a nationally accredited certifying organization for surgical technologists, both approved by the Oregon Health Authority -OR-

Completion of a surgical technologist training program in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with 16 hours of continuing education required every two (2) years per state regulation -OR-

Two (2) years of current surgical technologist experience within a healthcare facility in the United States, or as an employee of an agency or institution of the federal government, in the time frame immediately preceding January 1, 2017 with sixteen (16) hours of continuing education required every two (2) years per state regulation

New Graduate requirements :

A recent graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program must obtain a surgical technologist certification issued by a nationally accredited certifying organization for surgical technologists that is approved by the Oregon Health Authority within twelve (12) months of completion of a surgical technologist program
