Our professionals and technicians are certified and provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by use of field deployed Facility Support personnel, an accredited Personnel Monitoring service, a fully functional Instrumentation & Calibration facility, expertise in Radiological Engineering and the handling of Isotopes and Special Nuclear Materials.Position DescriptionUnder general technical direction, and with some latitude for the exercise of initiative and judgment, performs a wide variety of highly skilled technical assignments in support of the scientific and professional staff. Work assignments are usually on a specific task basis, requiring a high degree of proficiency in technical skills and techniques in such areas as fabrication, evaluation, testing, operation, maintenance or construction of equipment, systems and facilities involved with scientific investigations. May direct and coordinate the work efforts of other technical support personnel assigned to a specific project. Workers in this job classificationareeligible to receive overtime pay.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Calibrate radiation protection instrumentation per written procedures
Troubleshoot & repair electronic and electro-mechanical instruments and systems
Document calibration and repair work
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or technical field, and at least four (4) years of relevant work experience.
Perform incoming performance testing on new instrumentation
Develop calibration and maintenance procedures
Fabricate, modify, and test custom instrumentation systems
Perform maintenance on calibration facility equipment
Soldering skills
Common hand tool skills
Electronic troubleshooting skills, including the ability to read electronic schematics and use electronic diagnostic equipment such as signal generators, oscilloscopes, and volt meters.
Driver’s License
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Computer literate: MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
Machine shop skills
Air flow and vacuum systems knowledge
Ionizing radiation fundamentals
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Perform work within areas controlled for radiological purposes.
Moderate lifting (15-30 lbs.)
Heavy lifting (>30 lbs.)
