Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Software Engineer for Digital Education will be responsible for the design, development and support of the technologies and services that power Scholastic's digital applications across the world. In addition to being accountable for technology deliverables, the candidate will be responsible for guiding/mentoring junior members of an agile development team and will play a prominent role in architectural design of new products and features.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Execute technology initiatives to support Scholastic digital initiatives.
  • Develop complex code as an individual contributor without oversight.
  • Provide technical leadership with a focus on engineering best practices.
  • Mentor software engineers in their technical skills growth.
  • Maintain high quality standards.
  • Work with the performance team to ensure applications are properly perf tested.
  • Own the front end and/or back end architecture, both in its current state and the changes to drive it forward in line with future business and technology strategy.
  • Evaluate existing engineering processes and recommend improvements.
  • Recommend new technologies to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Lead/Oversee all front end or back end efforts on the team.
  • Enhance accessibility/usability of products to a larger number of customers on existing/future systems.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)
  • Expertise in modern web application development.
  • Practical experience in software engineering and application architecture.
  • Java API development experience, preferably on the Spring stack (Spring Boot, Spring Web, Spring Data, etc.)
  • Fluent in JavaScript, TypeScript.
  • Fluent in FE libraries/frameworks such as jQuery, lodash, AngularJS, Angular 2+, React, etc.
  • Relational DB experience. NoSQL DBs such as Mongo/DynamoDB a plus.
  • Cloud technology experience.
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability with a commitment to delivering high quality software that balances technical and business goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate with a variety of audiences at all levels.
  • Experience/Certification in Secure Development Practices ex: OWASP
  • Great understanding of network/computer architecture and protocols.
  • Ability to work completely independently.
  • Able to tackle open ended problems and design/implement solutions independently.
  • Prior experience mentoring and growing other engineers
