- Serve as a primary resource for the design, implementation, maintenance, and support of the University's high-performance research computing environment
- Plan, design, build, implement, and support a growing array of cloud automation tools and services
- Provide solutions that increase throughput and decrease the operational expense for the deployment and operation of systems
- Maintain subject matter expertise for systems/technologies by staying current with industry trends, following a professional development plan, and regularly sharing knowledge with ITS stakeholders
- Provide day-to-day operational ownership for assigned systems including patching, upgrading, configuration management, managing system backups, continuous monitoring, and performance management
- Proactively communicate with Service Owners for assigned systems.
- Develop and maintain documentation for the architectural design, build/configuration, and operational procedures for systems assigned
- Analyze and design systems to meet assigned project and operational requirements
- Maintain the security posture for assigned systems in accordance with industry best practice and ITS policies and procedures
- Participate in the development and maintenance of systems standards
- Act as the point of contact and subject matter expert for assigned applications and systems
- Participate as a member of the Architectural Review Board
- Facilitate functional/technical requirements gathering sessions with customers, impact assessment to current state architecture, and design sessions with ITS subject matter experts to meet customer requirements
- Develop, maintain, and share architectural blueprints, templates, and tools for describing our architecture
- Develop and maintain short- and long-term technical roadmaps for assigned systems
- Actively engage in the review/build of complex solutions utilizing new technologies, architectures, or techniques
- Collaborate with other systems architects to ensure that changes align with architectural norms, industry best practices, and ITS standards
- Additional Responsibilities
- Utilize ITS work management and project management tools and processes
- Actively participate, as needed, in ITS and campus projects
- Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation
- This is an on-site position. This position is not eligible for remote work.
- A Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
- At least three years of experience designing, executing, configuring, and troubleshooting high-performance research computing
- Proven design, planning, and implementation experience with infrastructure components including storage, network, and computing technologies
- At least five years of experience in systems administration of Linux servers
- Familiarity with research workload management technologies such as Slurm
- Applicants must address their ability to work with a culturally diverse population in their application or during the interview.
- AWS, Azure, or similar cloud certification
- PMI Certification or familiarity with project management
- Experience as a professional Windows systems administrator
- Experience administering enterprise networking
- Experience with NetApp storage administration
- Experience with complex enterprise systems in high availability, high volume environment (in addition to research compute specific systems)
- Experience with automated deployment and configuration management solutions (Ansible preferred)
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Knowledge of web services, API, REST, and RPC
- Experience in large-scale cloud architecture, including migrating on-prem application(s) to the cloud or building cloud-native applications
- Understanding of cloud application design principles (i.e., microservices, 12-factor apps, stateless application meant for cloud, containers, etc.), clusters, and distributed architecture
