Australia is a strategic market for Twitter globally, and it is imperative that we are able to communicate with Twitter’s stakeholders at scale in this market. These stakeholders include Twitter’s users or consumers, the brands that advertise on the platform, the national/local governments, employees across the country, and the local communities/NGOs who want a voice to be heard.

We are currently seeking a Head of Communications to help manage external communications and public relations for Twitter in Australia, based in the company’s Sydney office. The ideal candidate should be able to work closely with media to secure coverage that helps people understand how Twitter can be used to discover great content, connect with others, and express themselves.

Ideally, this person should have a successful track record of working with consumer and/or online brands, and has proven PR/Communication experience, such as managing media relations programs, writing press releases, organizing press events, managing speakers bureau activities, driving creative campaign development and handling crisis communications.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategy for communications in Australia by driving a data and insights-led approach to proactive and defensive media outreach
  • Develop proactive media relationship campaigns, tied to specific verticals, and secure coverage in relevant publications that increases Australians’ active usage of Twitter
  • Help communicate the value of Twitter for businesses by generating coverage that explains the benefits to brands and advertisers for engaging with Twitter’s influential audience
  • Liaise with global/regional communications team to effectively frame messages across consumer, businesses, corporate, policy and product areas
  • Work closely with Marketing, Content Partnerships, Sales and Public Policy teams in Australia to increase usage of Twitter by consumers, partners, advertisers, government and NGOs
  • Act as the primary media touchpoint for key policy and safety-related updates and devising country-level tactics
  • Own and drive timely strategic responses to inbound media queries on policy-related issues, correcting inaccuracies where appropriate and rallying internal stakeholders
  • Train and support the Public Policy Director to engage with media and/or identify proactive public speaking opportunities, including message preparation, media briefings and attendance
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Australian media to educate and engage them proactively on policy-related issues, over time ensuring Twitter’s messages are heard and understood
  • Develop and write communications strategies, plans, blog posts, statements, and Tweets in support of important announcements across consumer, corporate and policy

Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of experience in consumer and/or technology PR
  • Hands-on agency or in-house experience with consumer / online / media company
  • Possesses strong relationships with mainstream consumer, business, tech and political reporters in Australia
  • Previous experience managing and articulating complex and nuanced policy positions and messaging in a clear, timely manner
  • Good understanding of Australian culture and trends in consumer technology and digital advertising, especially Internet/communications platforms
  • Strong writing, editing, messaging skills, and an eye for detail
  • Strong skills in collaboration, project management and planning
  • Depth of knowledge about free expression and privacy issues highly desirable
  • Thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Flexible, amiable and a good co-worker
  • Able to work independently and proactively to develop/execute on programs and achieve measurable results
  • Diplomacy skills and experience navigating matrixed organisations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
