What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 2 or3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.The Hazardous Waste Management group (NPI-6) is looking for a highly motivated, customer service focused, and highly experienced individual to serve as a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician to join the Waste Operations 2nd Shift Team. The swing shift offers 12% shift differential of the basic hourly rate. NPI-6 ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). NPI-6 provides plenty of opportunity to learn new things and a supportive environment when challenges arise. Our team members comply with a variety of nuclear management related requirements; work independently on challenging concurrent projects requiring close cooperation, adaptability, initiative and willingness to provide support wherever needed to meet LANL’s National Security Mission.Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 2 ($48,600 - $74,700)The Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician 2 will interface with teams within the division and with other groups within TA-55 and the Laboratory. If selected, you will work under direct supervision, and will contribute to the operations of hazardous and radioactive material management processes. Specific duties may include, handling and inspecting drums and/or other containers of waste, operating forklifts and/or other mechanical loading/handling equipment and managing and tracking related documents to assure compliance.Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3 ($58,000 - $90,800)In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, the selected candidate will primarily support activities such as the handling, packaging and documenting hazardous and radioactive material; operating mechanical lifting equipment such as gantry/bridge cranes and forklifts; managing RCRA storage areas; and ensuring all results, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to the established requirements.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Regulation: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of Low Level Waste and hazardous material. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports.Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience operating mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices. Demonstrated skills in mechanical maintenance and testing. Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs. Demonstrated xperience with nuclear facility personal protective equipment (PPE) such as anti-contamination clothing, booties, a variety of safety gloves, and full-face respirator qualification.Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary environment and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.Clearance and Mandatory Certifications: The ability to obtain a Q-clearance and Human Reliability Program (HRP).DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.Education/Experience for Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Tec 2: Position requires a High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3:Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results.Independent Judgement: Demonstrated experience performing work and prioritizing tasks with nominal supervision, as well as contributing to a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.Customer Service: Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.Education/Experience for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Desired Qualifications:Regulation: Knowledge of one or more of the following: NNSS Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), LANL WAC, and the LANL New Mexico Environmental Department permit. Experience with nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization, and waste managementSkills/Expertise: Working knowledge of Low Level Waste or other regulated waste packaging requirements. Successful experience with accounting/management systems such as WCATS.Training/Certifications: Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift operator. Site specific training at TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR. Full qualification involves obtaining unescorted PF-4 access and Person-in-Charge qualification.Desired skills for Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Tec 3:Skills/Expertise: Experience and participation in audits of material and/or management activities. The ability to obtain and maintain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator.Regulations: Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure.
