Nonprofit seasonal retreat seeking hands on Part-time
Head of Finance (CFO/Controller)!
Star Island, a $4.2 million non-profit organization, with corporate offices in Portsmouth, NH is looking to add a part-time finance lead to their organization. This part-time role will have flexible hours and we anticipate needing roughly ten (10) to sixteen (16) hours a week.
This position will report to and work closely with the chief executive officer. In addition, they will partner with the senior leadership and the board of directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization. The position will oversee all compliance for government (federal and state) contracts and private grants. They must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace. Experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources including government (federal and state) contracts and an affiliate structure with diverse program areas will be needed.
Responsibilities include:
Oversee monthly financial close and review for accuracy
Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns
Create and continuously update SIC financial manual for the organization
Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets. Develop financial business plans and forecasts.
Develop effective tools for presenting financial information
Create weekly budget reports and work with department heads to help them track spending in their departments
Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed
Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships and investments
Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans
Create and monitor depreciation & fixed asset schedule
Temporarily Restricted Net Assets (TRNA) additions and releases & TRNA schedule
Grant tacking including federal government programs
Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team
Engage the finance committee and the board of directors to develop financial plans and projections, including attending monthly meetings as required and presenting plans and projections
Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions and stay up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or business administration required, CPA or a master’s degree in accounting preferred
Eight (8) plus years of progressively responsible management experience in accounting/finance experience within a nonprofit required
Demonstrated experience in government grants management policies both federal and state
Experience in managing a small team
Success in maximizing efficiency and improving customer service of a small finance team in a growing organization
Strong financial management skills—experience in maintaining the financial viability of an organization with multiple and shifting funding streams and in collaborating with CEO and Board to develop long-range financial goals
Ability to build productive relationships across the broad spectrum of persons; board, staff, government officials, provider partners, funders and donors
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Familiarity with NH rules & regulations, as well as MA
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and flexible
Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks
Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
