The DEI Senior Associate Director will largely focus on supporting the Director in DEI content development and delivery at all organization levels. This role will also support managing project plans and the co-facilitation and development of meetings related to other Diversity team programming and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will care deeply about our mission and believe that all students, regardless of their background, deserve a high-quality education. In addition, they will be driven and energized by the knowledge that they is helping to build DEI knowledge and systems to support antiracist practices, teaching, and mentalities that will enable Uncommon to better serve our students, families, and communities! This person will be committed to developing their professional expertise and will capitalize on the opportunity to build on their learning about diversity work and provide support to the team to help us continue to build an inclusive organization.

This position reports to the Director of DEI and will also manage the Associate Director of DEI.

Crucial duties & responsibilities

The position requires a smart, hard-working teammate who can handle both critical projects and smaller details with equal passion and efficiency. The majority of the role will be designing and delivering DEI professional development and supporting the management of DEI initiatives and Core work.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • DEI Professional Development:
    • Create and deliver DEI professional development to internal partners at all levels: School-based staff and students and Home Office teams
    • Develop facilitator training materials: staff and student
    • Develop and lead the Diversity Student Session Working Group and associated materials
    • Research and being proactive about learning new content and being on the forefront of DEI to improve self and organization’s development
  • Strategy and Operations:
    • Guide Director on DEI team initiatives and implementation strategies
    • Support management of annual planning process and strategy execution
    • Lead team operations and logistics including budgets, communications, knowledge management
    • Project manage DEI essential functions and yearly initiatives which include developing and monitoring tools (e.g., project plans, dashboard, key performance indicators, templates, etc.)
    • Analyze data and metrics to steer planning and action for continual improvement of DEI
  • Summer Teaching Fellowship (STF)
    • Supervise DEI Associate who runs STF program, (a unique, highly competitive teacher recruitment and preparation program designed to introduce college juniors from underrepresented backgrounds to teaching and urban education reform through experience in our Uncommon classrooms).
    • Supervise the execution of operations, budget, recruitment, and programming
    • Provide training or necessary development related to DEI session development or execution
    • Provide feedback and coaching regarding work output and performance
    • Own management of reporting for STF and support presentations

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Characteristics

  • Commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools
  • Demonstrated commitment to growth and personal development in the area of DEI and actively seeks out opportunities to learn more in this space
  • Professional expertise in the DEI space and experience conceptualizing, planning, and executing anti-racist programs and policies
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering professional development sessions for adults and students
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively
  • Outstanding ability to lead and drive change, including influencing and inspiring others through relationship building
  • Experience in management, development, and coaching of 1-2 people
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple projects with excellent project management skills
  • Ability to create and maintain systems that enhance team efficiency
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project plan development, management, and execution
  • Proficiency in data compilation and analyses
  • Ability to learn quickly, to pivot when needed, and to be effective in a fast-paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
  • Able to work autonomously and thoroughly with independent self-reflection, as well as take direction as needed
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends as required for project execution
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • 4-7 years of experience

Minimum educational level

  • Bachelor’s degree required
