Successful applicants will be under immediate supervision and trained to perform standard tests on construction material and inspections in routine phases of construction projects.Location: Lincoln / Superior StreetExamples of WorkTesting Work Includes: Perform or assist with standard tests on construction material for conformance to the plans and specifications. Perform tests such as slump tests, entrained air content tests, and unit weight tests on Portland cement concrete. Perform soil tests using a Light Weight Deflectometer and other equipment to determine soil stiffness and soil moisture content. Perform aggregate testing using sieves and other equipment to determine gradation and moisture content. Sample materials used in asphaltic concrete Inspection work includes: Inspect contractors' work on construction projects including checking grades, and elevations, and collecting, recording measurements, and maintaining automated records. Read and interpret construction plans and specifications to determine and verify that the work is being performed in conformance with the project plans and NDOT standards. Perform measurements of project quantities using tape measure, wheels, and GPS survey equipment. Document daily project activities; Material quantities, sampling requirements, and other construction related items with the use of computer record keeping software. Snow Removal Operations: Will receive training in order to acquire a Class B CDL. Will be trained to operate snow removal equipment. Work Environment: The majority of your workday will be spent in the outdoors during the course of a construction project. Environmental conditions can and will include: dust, heat, cold, sun, wind, and exposure to vehicular traffic. Employees are provided with the necessary safety equipment and training. Employees are provided with a state furnished vehicle for travel to and from their assigned projects and are directly responsible for the care of their assigned vehicle. Employees are provided the necessary materials and equipment to perform assigned duties and directly responsible for the care of those items.Qualifications / RequirementsREQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections OR coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment.PREFERRED: Experience in performing activities associated with construction work. Coursework or training in surveying. Post high school course in record keeping, trigonometry, and basic computers. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial drivers' license.OTHER: In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan Reading courses or have an Associate's degree in civil engineering technology, or related field may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire you will be provided with the required training material. This is self-paced training and once completed, provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Technician II level. Typically this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesEffective communication skills. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions
