Job Summary:

An Apprentice Carpenter must have the skills and knowledge to operate all hand tools, power tools and construction equipment. They must understand the materials and procedures for general building techniques and perform work necessary for framing, siding, concrete, door and window installation, etc. with limited to no supervision. In addition, the Apprentice Carpenter will be required to assist Journeyman Carpenters in advanced building techniques.

Essential Job Requirements:

Job Qualifications

Education: Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent, College degree preferred

Experience: Minimum 1-year full time carpentry construction experience required and minimum 2+ years construction industry experience preferred

Safe Lifting: Use proper lifting techniques when moving lumber and other materials. Always ask for assistance when moving heavy items.

PPE: Always wear personal protective gear such as ear protection, safety glasses, and gloves on the job.

Driving: Must have valid Driver License

A similar combination of both education and experience will be considered

Preferred Skills and Abilities

Construction Aptitude Skills: Strength, Stamina, Hand Eye Coordination, Attention to Detail, Problem Solving Skills, Mathematics/Geometry, Mechanically inclined, Organizational skills.

Apprentice Skills: Perform simple layout, be competent in all phases of framing, including setting windows and doors. Be competent in all phases of exterior finish/siding.

Mission Statement:

Work with Journeymen and Foremen/Superintendents to master BRB Safety, Quality, and Productivity standards, becoming an integral part of the BRB team. Work both independently and as a team member acquiring the tools and skills to become a Journeyman Carpenter.

Objectives

Prove yourself a valuable team member while acquiring necessary tools (per BRB tool list) and learning carpentry work necessary for custom residential construction from breaking ground to punch list completion (per BRB skills and competencies list).

Pays attention to important details related to work being performed and planned; Always inform Foreman/Superintendent of fastener and other stock material/inventory needs well before any shortage occurs.

Master understanding of BRB Standards in: Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Leadership

o Safety: Ensure safety & cleanliness of job site

 Always use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and be safe on the job site

 Ensure proper guardrails/handrails are erected and that slippery conditions and other hazards are remedied immediately

 Keep the job site and trailer clean and organized, floors swept, debris consolidated, and keep extension cords, air hoses and tools organized.

 Serve as member of Safety Committee learning BRB Safety Program

 Recognize near misses and safety hazards, address near misses and safety hazards to ensure jobsite remains safe and all accidents are avoided, alert Foreman/Superintendent or Safety Committee of unsafe conditions

o Quality: Ensure protection of completed work/material

 Keep all lumber/material piles neat, covered, and stacked level

 Protect finished surfaces (rosin paper/plywood/etc.)

 Stake all ground penetrations/sewer cleanouts/culverts/etc.

 Set example for subcontractors in site cleanliness

 Learn and perform BRB preferred installation methods and tolerances

 Ensure manufacturer’s recommended installation methods are followed

 Understand air, moisture, and vapor barrier importance and proper installation

o Productivity: Assist with jobsite productivity & cleanliness

 Scaffold erection/Material staging (in an accessible location)

 Assist Foreman/Superintendent and Carpenters in construction as necessary.

 Keep company and personal tools cleaned, oiled, and in a good state of repair. Assist with equipment inspection/lubrication (i.e. forklift, genie)

 Understand work planning and stay busy at all times

 Be prepared and on time every day

 Operating equipment only when efficient

o Leadership: Begin to exhibit leadership within the BRB team and amongst subcontractors

 Set an example for Carpenter’s Helpers and encourage development of their carpentry skills

 Encourage and maintain a positive work environment
