The security division of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Department of Public Safety concentrates on the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff within the hospital and on campus.

The department provides field officers, Bike and mobile patrol, investigators, and a communication unit for monitoring alarm systems and dispatching officers to service and emergency calls.

All officers are required to complete annual training that focuses on health care security.

Role Purpose

As the first responders for the Department of Public Safety, the dispatcher must be customer focused at all times, in a sometimes stressful environment, maintaining professionalism as a high priority.

The dispatcher, is responsible for managing request from callers and supporting public safety officers ensuring everyone’s safety.

The communications officer must remain in control of all events utilizing, the radio, telephone, and cameras, and paging system until resolution.

Responsibilities

Manages and responds to public safety radio system, telephone, paging, parking intercom, emergency alerts systems, fire alarms, security, and safety alarms.

Utilizes the computer aided dispatch system to interview callers gathering all of the relevant information regarding public safety related issues, process the information in the system and utilize the information to dispatch the public safety officers in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

Manages and comprehends thoroughly the emergency procedures which relates to matters requiring public safety intervention ensuring the activation of the proper group (Public Safety Officers and other emergency personnel as well as the public) responsible for responding to the event.

Ensures the medical center community is safe through familiarization of the Department of Public Safety operations in order to assist public safety officers and coordinate the assistance with other law enforcement and emergency service agencies as well as knowing the location and layout of streets, buildings, park, and other significant areas of the medical center campus as to maximize the accuracy and speed of dispatches.

Performs crisis intervention over the telephone.
