The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering ( NACOE ) offers a PhD degree in engineering with a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Applied Mechanics option.Approximately 700 students are enrolled in these programs supported by over 20 full time faculty. Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by close association with the Subzero Research Laboratory ( SRL ) that focuses on ice/snow science, the Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), the Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ), the Energy Research Institute ( ERI ) and the Montana Engineering Education Research Center ( MEERC ). The Department also provides hands-on experience for students through a variety of community-based projects.Candidates for these positions will be hired as part of a NACOE’s Resilient and Sustainable Communities Initiative intended to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and promote the development of engineering solutions that help communities prepare for threats, evaluate risks, and adapt to and recover from natural and human caused disruptions without compromising future generations. The Initiative will add faculty across all departments in the NACOE (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and the Gianforte School of Computing). Faculty with cross disciplinary interests and expertise are particularly encouraged to apply.Full-time tenure track appointments in the Department of Civil Engineering will have primary responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. Successful candidates will become an integral member of the Department, with duties to include teaching courses in the curriculum, contributing to program and curriculum development, developing a nationally recognized research program with extramural funding, and participating in professional/service activities. The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is served by 8 national airlines and is the busiest airport in the state.The Department The CE Department has 17 tenured or tenure-track faculty and offers ABET -accredited baccalaureate programs in both civil engineering and construction engineering technology, and graduate programs at the Master’s and PhD levels. The Department has approximately 660 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students. The Department is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering mechanics for the College of Engineering ( COE ). Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by ties with the Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ) and the Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), as well the resources available in the Subzero Laboratory Facility ( SRL ), all of which are part of the College of Engineering ( COE ).The COE has maintained an international reputation in the field of snow and ice mechanics since the early 1970’s in studies dealing with snow and ice structure, metamorphism and avalanches. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and enhance the snow and ice mechanics and/or cold region engineering program. Campus wide, MSU researchers have gained prestigious international reputations for their extramurally funded cold-focused research in a range of disciplines. The SRL , which is housed in the CE Department, was constructed in 2008. It provides a focal point for leading interdisciplinary and synergistic cryosphere research and education endeavors.
