Rapid is seeking a Sr Automation Engineer for a hands-on and impactful position based in our fast-growing Lowell, MA facility. The individual in this role will be responsible for existing and new automation lines and equipment. The Automation Engineer will independently design, install, troubleshoot, and repair electronically controlled manufacturing equipment, robots, and related systems.

Primary functions will include working with, troubleshooting, and developing new PLCs, vision systems, punch, heat stake, robots, pick and place machines, and other automated control systems. Work will include directing and developing preventive maintenance on existing equipment, new equipment installations, and integrations. This position is required to work in a class 8 cleanroom and requires strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive Automation improvements and implementation
  • Responsible for the design, specifications, installation, and commissioning of capital automation projects
  • Works from diagrams, written and verbal descriptions to design and improves the productivity and repair automation equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains all parts and equipment on the automation line to maximize run time; monitor operations and suggest any mechanical/electrical changes or upgrades that would increase efficiency.
  • Develop and repair PLC and HMI applications to meet specifications.
  • Plans, evaluates, organizes, and implements automation-related projects and initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain custom electromechanical equipment, automated work cells, vision systems, and multi-axis robotics.
  • Works with vendors to purchase and repair automation equipment, as necessary.
  • Develop and troubleshoot PLC, vision systems, and other automated control systems.
  • Analyze and correct equipment malfunctions by troubleshooting, replacing defective parts, adjusting, and repairing, including all required verifications and documentation.
  • Analyze and correct process defects by inspecting or testing components, inspecting equipment, adjusting process parameters, valves, switches, controllers, etc. as necessary to achieve acceptable parts.
  • Analyze automation malfunctions by checking against troubleshooting procedures, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Write robotic programs to ensure operational efficiencies of operating equipment for production.
  • Initiate and complete technical activities leading to improved production processes.
  • Cross-train other technical staff as needed on specialty robotic workstations.
  • Provide technical assistance to others as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Follow cleanroom protocols for hygiene, gowning, & PPE
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with other functions to investigate failures.

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Education:
    • Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical/automation engineering or the equivalent from an accredited school
    • Programmable Logic Controllers
    • Mechanical Knowledge
  • Proven skills (must have):
    • Must be proficient in PLC and Drive Software Packages
    • Must be highly computer literate.
    • Must be able to effectively diagnose and solve problems.
    • 5+ years of prior experience with automation required.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude
    • Thorough understanding of manufacturing process, tooling, material properties, and engineering standards
    • Knowledge of statistical techniques, problem-solving methods, technical drawings, maintenance techniques and manufacturing techniques are required.
    • Thorough understanding of automated control systems, computer integrated manufacturing, and systems standards especially power distribution, PLCs, drives, man machine interfaces, and motion control
    • Proficient PC skills in a Windows environment.
    • Understanding in reading electrical and pneumatic schematics.
    • PLC programming, variable-speed drives, vision systems, servo-systems, industrial sensors, and Relay Ladder Logic
    • Technical skills in manufacturing processes of mechanical systems
    • Proficiency with PCs and Rockwell Automation
    • Panel-view, Factory Talk, or other operator interface programming
    • Experience completing and documenting preventive and non-routine maintenance.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge/Experience (Nice to have):
    • ISO 9001 or 13485, CFR 820
    • Cleanroom experience (ISO 8).
    • Strong PC Skills - AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications
    • Ability to adjust, replace and/or repair mechanical drive components, chain & sprockets, pulleys, bearings, and gearboxes.
    • Ability to troubleshoot, replace and/or repair solenoids, cylinders, and other pneumatic systems.
    • Knowledge of slitting and winding methods, equipment, and procedures

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Able to perform basic shop math and read blueprints.
  • Sedentary work, walking, standing, fingering, feeling, pulling, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive motion, required to have close visual acuity to assemble parts, no adverse environmental conditions.
  • Close visual acuity to work on the computer and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work, operate machinery.
  • Ability to shift work schedule for periods as needed.
  • Adjusting, moving, or lifting objects up to 50 pounds
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools
  • Appropriate gowning procedures will be required (hairnet, safety glasses, cleanroom apparel/lab coats, gloves)
  • Occasional environmental odors may be present.
  • May be required to work extended hours and weekends on occasion.
