Job Description

This role involves developing and executing research plans for advancing drug discovery and basic biology relevant to genetic neurological disorders, while working as part of a close-knit team. The span of responsibilities and activities may include identification of new drug targets, implementation of in vitro and in vivo models, evaluation of diverse therapeutic approaches and drug modalities (which may include gene therapy, antisense oligonucleotides, small molecules and others) in preclinical models, elucidation of pathways and mechanisms modulated by candidate therapies, establishment of new technical approaches, and development of biomarkers. The position is an integral part of our research team and provides opportunities for continued growth and learning.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Contributing both intellectually and at the bench to the unit’s research and drug discovery programs in genetic disorders
  • Ownership and scientific leadership within various aspects of the unit’s research efforts
  • Careful design, execution and troubleshooting of experiments
  • Clear and timely communication of plans and results, as well as individual insight and analysis, to project teams and other stakeholders
  • Supervision and mentorship of work being performed by junior staff
  • Managing workstreams being conducted in other groups, or externally by collaborators or contract research organizations
  • Staying abreast of relevant literature and external developments in areas of focus

Close collaboration with scientists within the department and across Biogen, toward a common goal of developing life-changing treatments for severe genetic disorders

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have a strong background in research with enthusiasm for applying this to drug discovery. They will have a demonstrated record of scientific rigor and productivity, as well as adaptability, given the broad scientific mandate of this research unit. Prior experience in neuroscience, including preclinical models of CNS disorders or techniques used to study such models in vitro or in vivo, is desirable. Qualified candidates must have the ability to work in a fast-paced team setting, take on leadership roles within teams, generate high quality data and present their work in various forums, and deliver results consistent with departmental goals and timelines.

  • Ability to contribute intellectually to scientific discourse within the team while contributing substantially at the bench
  • Demonstrated ability to independently conduct research projects and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Technical expert in one or more relevant areas, such as: advanced microscopy and image analysis, gene therapy development and delivery, development of cellular models of disease, behavioral characterization of in vivo models, biochemistry and molecular biology relevant to the CNS, or advanced histology techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability work successfully in a highly collaborative environment
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and team spirit to learn and take on new areas of research and drug discovery

Education

PhD in the biological sciences with a demonstrated record of high quality independent research in an academic or industry setting.
