Job Summary Under the supervision of the Central Heating Plant (CHP) Assistant Plant Man a ger , this position is responsible for the testing, certifying, installing, repairing a nd inspecting of instrument and control systems. Maintains instruments that measure record and operate the process-controlled systems that input daily into the Central Heating Plant's Distributed Control System (DCS) which is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Central Heating Plant. The role will also support the Campus Metering Engineer with instrument calibrations. Essential Functions

Loc a t e s, diagnoses and repairs fault conditions in PLC (Programmable Logic Controll er) based control systems, motor controls, AC ( Alternating Cu rrent) drives and associated industrial controls.

Applies the principles of electrical theory as applied to electronic and power circuits including wiring circuits, transformer connections, electrical recorders and instruments .

Maintains Power ' Plant CEMS (burner management system) a nd Opacity systems.

Assembles , disassembles and maintains major rotating equipment such as synchronous condensers, motors and g enerators as re quired by no r m a l as signment for production.

Performs constr uction work in accordance with safe proc edures and working from work orders and drawings.

I nterp rets circuit maps, work orders and electrical diagrams.

P erform s all types of rigging associated with the re moval and installation of tr ansformers switch gears, motors and related app urtenances .

Maintains and repairs t emperature, pressure and flow measuring de vices .

Troubleshoots instrument and control malfunctions and s elects the pr oper corrective action .

Uses a variety of manual and pow er tools.

Us e s a variety of test instruments and equipment including personal computers, micro-processor , volt meters, amm eters, ohmmeters, watt meters, oscilloscopes, relay test equipment and other related instruments.

Takes p recautions re g a rding occupational h azards of the electrical trade.

I nstalls, maintains and tests control systems, high speed data and t elemetering syst ems, communication systems, load control systems, protective relays a nd instruments .

Works f ro m d rawings and documents field changes.

Calibra te s transducers and indicating meters.

Documents test results.

T ests and calibrates pneumatic a nd electronic equipment including pressure , temperature, level and flow transmitters, recorders, relays universal power supplies (UPS) and positioners.

Maintains turbine supervisory instrumentation.

Tests combustion control sys te ms.

Maintains records and inv entory of spare parts.

Responds to emergency service calls at t he Central Heating Plant.

May exercise functional supervision over 1-5 employees on a project-by-project b as is.

Operates motor vehicle to travel to work sites.

Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

F our (4) years' of full-time technical experience as an instrument technician (with troubleshooting , m aintenance and repair duties at a power plant) or similar military duties and one of the following:

Associate ’ s Degree (in electrical technology, control systems or related discipline) .

Ce rt ification from ISA (International Society of Automation) or equivalent institution .

Military training equivalent to the training referenced above .

Valid Driver's License .

Previous e x perienc e working with 4-20 MA (milliampere), mechanical and pneumatic control systems.

Considerable knowledge of digital and analog controls.

Skill in working with the tools and equipment used in the electrical utility/ process control trade.

Ability to work from drawings and diagrams and from oral and written instructions.

Ability to make job/work related decisions.

Ability to climb, work in high places, work in confined spaces along with heavy lifting and other strenuous activities.

Ability to read and interpret electrical sketches, diagrams. schematics and instruction books,

Ability to repair, adjust and calibrate instruments, controls and other mechanical or elec t rical control devices.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow lea rn members and vendors.

Ability to follow and g ive instructions (both oral and written) of a technical nature.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Skill in working with the tools and equipment used in the electrical utility/process control trade.

Ability to climb, work in high places, work in confined spaces along with heavy lifting and other strenuous activities .

Ability to estimate t ime and materials.

Location and complexity of the UMA (University of Ma ssachusetts ) power plant electrical distribution system and PLC based control systems.

Confined space training.

Thorough knowledge of the UMA protective switching a nd tagging procedures.

Knowledge of the operation and troubleshooting of Allen Bradley PLC based control systems.

Knowledge of boiler combustion controls and burner management systems.

This position requires the availability to respond to emergency call-ins and irregular hours.

Mon-Fri; 7AM-3PM

Responds to emergency service calls at t he Central Heating Plant .
