RN School Nurse

SCHEDULE NOTE : Health Care Centers for Schools staff observe the same 9 month calendar school year as the parish school system including the same scheduled breaks such as Christmas break, Spring break and Summer break.

Health Care Centers for Schools staff do not work when school is not in session.

The Registered Nurse School Nurse provides safe therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way, incorporating differences into the provision of care for children and adolescents.

Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum to include patient and family education.

Relies on education and training to complete responsibilities within scope of licensure as registered nurse.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education : Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Experience : 2 years of nursing experience

Licensure : Current, unrestricted Louisiana State license as RN, CPR Certified

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care to students with acute illness and injuries within Health Centers in Schools nursing guidelines.

Refer students to school resource or hospital emergency room when appropriate

Evaluate & update immunization records of every student enrolled in the school.

Initiate and update student’s plan of care as requested by Pupil Appraisal Services or Exceptional Student Services within established guidelines.

Perform hearing and vision screens.

Administer medications according to Nursing Protocol and physicians’ orders.

Orient new employees and serve as a mentor

Communicate with parent / guardian, support staff and school faculty as necessary concerning the student’s health status while maintaining confidentiality.

Provide preventive health education and counsel students, families and school staff on issues relating to the child’s health.

Attends schools Open House.

Documentation of weekly supervisory visits with School Health Assistants

Responsible for maintaining Continuing Education according to LSBN guidelines.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
